Yo-Ho-Ho! join the Muppets on the high seas in their follow up to the successful adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol' in this version of the famous pirate adventure 'Treasure Island'. Tim Curry stars as Long John Silver alongside Gonzo, Rizzo, Kermit as Captain Smollet and Miss Piggy as Benjamina Gunn.
Muppet Treasure Island was the fifth big-screen Muppet adventure and the second directed by the late Jim Henson's son Brian. Robert Louis Stevenson's tale has been filmed in a variety of ways, but this is the first to feature a Caribbean cruise for rats, pirates who bemoan their reputations by song and Billy Connolly. The Scottish comic is just about upstaged for high camp larks by Tim Curry, who as Long John Silver is clearly having the best fun since Rocky Horror. Newcomer Kevin Bishop rounds out the human cast, but of course what everyone wants to see is which of the Muppet gang plays which part. Kermit is Captain Smollett, with Fozzie as Squire Trelawney and Miss Piggy as long-lost love Benjamina Gunn, who's held captive by the Zanzibarbarians.
All the pirate movie trademarks are to be found: treasure maps, swordfights and the drinking of rum. But it's in the truly wonderful songs that this version comes alive. "Cabin Fever", "Sailing for Adventure" and "A Professional Pirate" are among the most dazzling pieces of puppet choreography ever attempted by Henson Productions. The subsequent Muppets from Space didn't manage to scale the same heights of hilarity, probably because it dared to reveal where Gonzo came from. So this is definitely the highlight of his and Rizzo's screen career.
On the DVD: Muppet Treasure Island includes the excellent 23-minute documentary "The Tale of the Story Beyond the Tale", heavily featuring Gonzo and Rizzo. The comic duo are all over this DVD: in the animated menus, introducing all the extras and featuring in the commentary from director Brian Henson. Between all these additional features there's plenty of new (and old) jokes as well as amazing insights into the technical wizardry at work. We also learn this movie featured the very first CGI Muppet (surely a contradiction in terms?) The movie hasn't arrived in the most pristine of transfers, but even in the sing-along feature for a couple of the best songs, the sound is still excellent. --Paul Tonks --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The light hearted fun factor of the movie goes from begining to end, with stars Billy Connolly (who has a small but pivotal part), and Tim Curry doing a wonderful job.
This movie is good enough to buy on dvd even without the bonus materials, but with them it's even better. There is a good mini documentary about the making of the movie that shows you some of the sets, as well as small interviews with a few of the cast and crew. The sing along bonus feature is a bit of good fun for the children too. The movie has a feature comentary by director Brian Henson that is informative and pleasant to the ear. This movie also has plenty of good one liners, and the "Cabin Fever" scene is great!
I have been wanting to buy this movie for years and now that I have I am not dissapointed. I am happy with the sound and picture quality and the only drawback for me is that Disney didn't put it out on dvd sooner.
This is definately a movie that has appeal even after you have seen it a number of times.
Talk about sophisticated dialog.
Benjamina Gunn says, "You left me standing at the altar!"
Captain Smollet replies, "I was on a ship headed for Zanzibar. I got cold feet."
Benjamina Gunn, "You're a frog! You're supposed to have cold feet!"
Tim Curry (being himself) was an excellent Long John silver. The only other film where he exceeded this is in the film "Oscar" with Sylvester Stallone.
This movie was nominated for both Golden Satellite Award and Young Artist Award.
No matter how you CUT it this is a worth while movie to own.
The whole muppet cat is magnificent. From this film I feel i have learn't a valuable lesson: the best thing about being a pirate is you don't have to wear a suit.
its well worth a watch especially if you've got children, coz there'll love it
Treasure Island getting the Muppets overhaul. It just has to be worth it. Funnily enough though, like the other great avetnure they have had with Dickensian London, they stick to the story, but just add their own brand of mirth.
For me, there isn't a best part as it is all just brilliant. But perhaps the songs are the best. Good old Hans Zimmer, he of Pirates fame and others. The entrance of Miss Piggy as Benjamina Gunn for example, is sheer class.
Get your laughing muscles ready for a sensation they aint had in a while when you buy this one, for it is GREAT!
When Jim Hawkins is given an ancient pirate treasure map by his dying friend he decides that as he has nothing else to do he will get a boat and a crew, and go in search of the treasure that is marked with an X. While on the ship Jim meets Long John Silver, the one legged cook, and the two become friends. However him and many more of the crew may not be all that they first appear to be, and unfortunately for Jim he might find out the hard way.
The legendary Kermit the frog has the lead as far as the muppets go as the captain of the ship, with his other half, Miss Piggy who left and came to live on the island when Kermit left her standing at the altar. The rest of the gang also appear including, Rizzo the rat, Gonzo, Fozzy the bear, to name but a few. Tim Curry has the role of Long John Silver and is very good in this role. Kevin Bishop co stars as Jim Hawkins the young boy who was given the treasure map by his old friend Billy Bones, who was played by comedian Billy Connelly.
There are a number of nice extras on the DVD itself including: a documentary about the making of the movie with interviews from certain members of the cast and crew. There is a feature length commentary from the director Brian Henson which are always very interesting, and finally a sing along bonus that is wonderful for the kids.Read more ›
