2.0 out of 5 stars alright for starters, 15 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Munich (Lonely Planet City Guide) (Paperback)
I have been to Munich several times but cannot say that this book brought it to life at all.

I bought the book in prepation for a further visit and I particuarly wanted to learn more about the museums and other sights. In fact this turned out to be one of the weakest (and shortest) sections of the book.

Another very weak area are the maps at the back. I found these difficult to follow: for example, only a few street names are included. This makes it difficult to cross-reference with entries in the text.

The photographs are only average and whilst there is a map of the Metro which is just about adequate it is a pity that there is not a map of the tram routes.

The descriptions of places to eat are rather better and there were several places I would like to eat on the strength of what I read.

The book is weak on places to see just outside Munich - i.e. within the City transportation system, but it does contain some useful information (and better maps) on Salzburg and other places further afield.

This is the first Lonely Planet guide to Munich and it provides a good introduction to anyone who had already planned a trip there. But it does not really "sell" the city to those who have not discovered its delights, nor does it provide many pointers for further research on behalf of the reader who wants to dig deeper for example by providing website addresses.

2.0 out of 5 stars Out of date, 8 Aug 2011

I purchased this guide book a few weeks before a weekend in Munich, but was very disappointed at how out of date it was. I blame myself (partly) for not checking the publication date, but all of the pointers on where to go etc were hopeless. The maps were difficult to follow, and we ended up relying on information we picked up locally at the toursit office etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, 31 May 2001

Of several Munich guides I own this is the best one I've bought to date. It's witty, and gives a great overview of attractions, hotels and restaurants alongside the usual wealth of practical information. The maps could be organized better but still are far superior to that of the Rough Guide, Fodor's or Frommer's. As a newcomer to New York I know what it's like to be parachuted into a big city, and Lonely Planet's book made Munich easily accessible, and fun.
