I've been holidaying in Southern Germany, on and off, for the last ten years. I have some friends there and know some areas well, so I'd never bothered with a guide book in the past. This year I went there for a longer trip and took the Lonely Planet Munich, Bavaria and Black Forest guide with me. I found it to be a complete revelation and I will definitely be taking it with me on all future trips.

When it talked about areas I'd visited in the past I thought the info and recommendations were spot on, and it also opened my eyes to a whole host of new places I'd never been to previously but will definitely visit again. It is well laid out, easy to read and informative. I now know exactly where the black forest gateaux was invented, and they still make it to the original recipe in the original cafe! The guide also has some great walking recommendations, and cultural highlights to experience (the Fasnet festival is brilliant - why has nodoby mentioned it to me in the past?!).

Highly, highly recommended. Buy it now!

I tend to trust Lonely Planet to be adequate. And it was.

Best thing:
There is a section in the front with suggested walks in the German Alps. We did one of these and had a fantastic hike which we would never have found from the tourist information centre or elderly hotel manager. The hike crossed the face of the Alpspitze mountain and was VERY scary in parts and, although the book made it clear that this was one for the foot-sure, I was surprised that they'd recommended it. For the excitement as well as the views, this was one of the best hikes I've ever done.

Worst things:
The Lonely Planet, bless their good intentions, doesn't like fly-drivers because of the environmental damage. So the road-rules section was pretty bare and there were many common road signs/instructions which would have been helpful to have a translation for.

As with other Lonely Planet guides, the maps are rubbish. Luckily Germany (with the exception of Garmisch Partenkirchen) is easy to navigate by place names so we didn't have too much trouble.

The Black Forest 1 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
A useful and handy guide for the Black Forest. Places of interest were just that, and well worth seeing. This guide tells you what you need to know about the area and what is worth visiting. Only used it for this region as I know the other two areas well.
