5.0 out of 5 stars A great book and a brief glimpse at one of Mexico's finest cartoonists from recent times 11 April 2014
By R.Suarez - Published on Amazon.com
Just in time for Brazil's World Cup 2014, Editorial Tusquets releases Trino Camacho's latest book, "El mundial de Trino". For those not familiar with the author, perhaps Trino's most famous cartoon (at least, the one he's widely known for) is the one he co-created with Jose Ignacio Solorzano (JIS): "El Santos vs la Tetona Mendoza". In recent years though, he has been published in Grupo Refoma's newspapers in Mexico with several different strips, such as 'Don Taquero', 'Cronicas Marcianas' and 'Fabulas de policias y ladrones'. Contrary to 'El Santos...', the latter mentioned are more family friendly, and so are his recent books.

Having said that, except for the occasional bad word here and there, this is a book that can be read by anyone. Trino has been saying in recent interviews that, while the theme in this book is soccer, anyone who reads it should be able to enjoy it. After reading it, I agree with his assessment, there are so many pop-culture references that anyone, young and old, will definitely find something that will make them laugh. Super heroes playing soccer, metrosexual soccer players, players posting on social media while in the game and the referee as "the main villain", are only but a few examples of what you will find here, a compilation of never-before published cartoons. A highlight for me, as a fan, was that towards the end of the book, Trino includes his first ever published cartoon, I will not spoil it for you but I thought it was a great detail, and consistent with the theme, it was a cartoon he made for a soccer magazine.

Being a book made in and for Mexico, there may be some references people from other countries may have a hard time understanding, but they are so few that they will not prevent anyone from enjoying the contents of 'El mundial de Trino'.

Available in Spanish (not sure if there are any plans for an English edition), I can highly recommend this . A great book and a brief glimpse at one of Mexico's finest cartoonists from recent times. If you liked this, his prior book, Viva la Familia!... Pero bien lejos is also available through Amazon, also worth a look.
