Book Description

16 Sep 2011

Whoever said life began at 40 was dead right…

A riotous romantic comedy about never-ending motherhood, second chances and growing old disgracefully.

What do you do when:

Mr Could Do Worse dumps you on the very night you think he's going to propose?

Your twenty-something son turns up on your doorstep, with a broken heart and dirty washing in tow?

You find out you're going to be a granny - at 45?

Your son's maybe ex-girlfriend's father starts making wickedly naughty suggestions?

Your ex's new bit of stuff wants to become your new best friend?

Your 70-year-old father is dating someone young enough to be your sister?

You make the same mistakes you made in your twenties two whole decades later?

You can't get the one person you want out of your head?

You grab the vodka and wonder if you're too old for all this crap…

About the Author

Kate Lawson was born on the edge of the Fens and is perfectly placed to write about the vagaries of life in East Anglia. In between moving house, raising a family, singing in a choir, walking the dog, working in the garden, taking endless photos and cooking, Kate is also a scriptwriter, originating and developing a soap opera for local radio, along with a pantomime for the town in which she lives.
Writing as Gemma Fox, Kate was short-listed for the Melissa Nathan Comedy Romance Award in 2006.
As Sue Welfare, Kate published 6 Rom Coms, two of which are currently under development for TV. Her comedy ‘Write Back Home’ was part of the 1999 Channel Four Sitcom Festival. Most recently Kate has been working with BBC Voices in a variety of ongoing writing projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good light read 19 Sep 2008
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

Robert - dependable and dull - dumps 40 something Susie just as she thinks he is about to propose. Susie starts to re-evaluate her life and decides that it could do with a bit more excitement. Then son Jack turns up on the doorstep because his girlfriend has finished with him and daughter Alice wants to move back home because of a row with her partner and suddenly Susie's life is not her own. Two very different men - Simon and Matt appear and ex-boyfriend Robert starts to seek her company again even though he has a new girlfriend - Sakia - who also wants to be friends with Susie. Life has become much more exciting overnight it seems and Susie wonders why she ever wished for change. Amusing and easy to read with realistic characters and relationships, this is a book to curl up with in front of a fire or on a beach - I loved it. This author has also written books under the names of Gemma Fox and Sue Welfare.

4.0 out of 5 stars For mums of all ages 1 July 2008
Format:Paperback
I read this without reading the sypnosis and was pleasantly surprised. Humourous and honest, this is a perfect read for your summer holiday as it moves along at a good pace without much concentration needed. Not bad for a first book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy reading - worth spending time/money on 29 Aug 2011
By Sarah
Format:Kindle Edition
I downloaded this onto my kindle in a batch of 20 or so, to take on holiday. Sadly I didn't get to it until after we got back home - I would have enjoyed spending a whole afternoon on the sunlounger staying in Susie's world. (I've had to interrupt my reading over the last 5 nights/mornings.)

She sounded a nice enough person, but to be honest, I'd guessed the twist quite early on, but that didn't spoil the remainder of the book. How she put up with being a shoulder for her ex, without flattening him, I really don't know!

Kate's writing style is easy-reading, and makes me want to read another of her novels.
