Review

`This honest, beautifully expressed memoir relates Jeremy Howe's shock and grief, but beyond that it evokes fierce parental devotion, a remarkable understanding of small children and a grittiness that will chime with anybody who has experienced, or fears, such a calamity'
--Mail on Sunday

Product Description

In the summer of 1992, Jeremy Howe put his two daughters, Jessica, six and Lucy, four, to bed unaware of the devastating tragedy about to unfold.

Just after midnight the household was woken by a policeman who had come to tell them that Jeremy’s wife, Lizzie, who had been away teaching at a summer school, was dead. She had been murdered.

This is the candid, heartrending story of how Jeremy and his girls faced the worst thing that could possibly happen and, bit by bit and piece by piece, put their lives back together.

It's a story of how Daddy became Mummydaddy and of the pitfalls along the way, from how much to tell your children about their mother's violent death to the practicalities of knowing what they like in their packed lunch; from helping your children to grieve when your own grief is so sharp it threatens to overwhelm you to making sure that they brush their teeth and comb their hair.

It's a story full of tears, but also of love and family and redemption.

The Pan Real Lives Series brings together some truly remarkable stories. From moving accounts of suffering and redemption to fun and fabulous confessions, entertaining adventures and touching tales of devotion, these are life-changing stories told from the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotive, Truly Heart Rendering 15 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Bought this book after hearing Jeremy Howe on Radio 2 talking about his life and the trials and tribulations faced in bringing up his two daughters following the terrible murder of his wife.
The book was very well written, true to life and extremely emotional in parts - this is a fantastic testament to Mr Howe in his determination to overcome adversity, and to bring up his children to be normal, well balanced individuals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving 3 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book after reading the serialisation in the Daily Mail-I found it to be an incredibly moving book and very well written. It is surreal that it happened and that they all came through it . It is a testament to one man's character how he chose the difficult path of raising his daughters after suffering an incredible loss.

5.0 out of 5 stars now this is worth 5 stars 16 Mar 2012

I have bought books before which have 5 stars and been left really dissapointed and wondering if the authors friends have made them up! This one however is so moving, so real you feel like you know the family. Its totally worth 5 stars, its not a book that is gruesome or full of grim details, I had to find the real details online. But its about the human ability to recover from disaster and pain. I loved it and my heart goes out to those girls and their amazing dad.

I first read a review about this book in the Sunday Times ~ and I'm glad I did because had I just seen the cover and title, I would never have picked it up. Having read the book I can understand why the title was chosen, but it doesn't (in my opinion) encourage a wide audience to read it. I also didn't feel comfortable awarding this book stars because it seems wrong to rate such a tragic heartbreaking and true story ~ but it is well written so I gave it four.
In my opinion, the author Jeremy Howe is slow and reluctant to divulge his feelings and emotions in this book. There is none of that raw, heart rending emotion you might expect, in fact he tells much of the tragedy that befell him, his wife Lizzie, and their children and family, in a matter of fact way. He also takes great pains to express (repeatedly) how after his wife's murder, he was not good at any of the the roles that in the past have been traditionally associated with women. I rather suspect that he was attempting to show just how good his late wife Lizzie had been as a wife, mother, chief cook and family organizer ~ whilst at the same time juggling a demanding and intellectual career. Yet I felt that his deprecation of himself in these so called "feminine" roles served to make him seem a little sexist ~ e.g. men are not good as this sort of thing, these are women's roles.
I thought the film that Jeremy ultimately made about his wife, psychologically fascinating; it revealed much about his state of mind. Although he saw its creation as a kind of cathartic exercise, a coming to terms with Lizzie's brutal murder and his (and the rest of the family's) loss, I saw it quite differently.

4.0 out of 5 stars Was great, until the last dozen pages 30 Mar 2012

I found this book, like the other reviews - difficult to put down. It was moving, honest and well-written.

It was inspiring to know that life could turn out okay after such a harsh tragedy. However I think Mr. Howe robbed us of a major piece of his recovery and healing by only revealing it at the end.

Perhaps it was written this way because the editors might think it would not garner as much sympathy. But I think it would have heightened his humanity.

I do still recommend reading it regardless of the above. And it was even better to get it on the kindle daily deal for 99p

4.0 out of 5 stars MIXED EMOTIONS 25 Mar 2012
By Carol 'avid little bookworm' TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is very well written and brought out mixed emotions for me. It's hard to feel anything other than compassion and admiration for a family that has overcome such adversity and a father who has managed to raise two girls, who in his own words are 'undamaged' by their mother's murder. At times I found it difficult not to cry when reading this book.

So much of the book I related to - my sister, brother and I were brought up by our father, alone, after our mother left when I was indeed four years of age, as Lucy was at the time of the loss of her mother. We never saw her again. I know just what that feeling of loss is at such an early age. I know that chaos, feeling different and my father's feelings of complete hopelessness. Unfortunately, he tried to 'swim' but at times life overwhelmed him too much. He never remarried and died aged 45 a broken man. I know how hard things must have been for Jeremy Howe just managing on his own to bring up two daughters, even before he had to manage his grief for a lady he clearly loved deeply, and, I feel, he conveys this well.

I liked the way he manages to inject humour into his story where he can, so the reader doesn't get dragged down with the sheer grief of his challenge - 'I felt pleased with myself that I was clinically mad enough to have passed my interview', I chuckled out loud at that.

However, If I was rating this book on Mr. Howe's sheer grit, determination and courage I'd give it 5*s , but I want to remain objective about the actual literary content.

Although I found this book a good read, (I really find it hard to say I liked it - it just seems inappropriate somehow given the subject matter), it was articulately written and an easy read.
