Book Description

21 Feb 2008
Bambino is a glossy, weekly parenting magazine aimed at ‘yummy mummies’. Their ideal mother always looks immaculate, never lets her children watch TV and only ever eats organic food . . .

So when Cait, a chaotic single mother, becomes Bambino’s agony aunt, she thinks she might be the single worst person to do the job. But despite her early unwillingness, she realises gradually that the women who are writing to her really do need help, and ultimately she finds herself taking her own advice. And things take a romantic turn when she starts a correspondence with a mysterious reader – a single dad who merely signs his name ‘R’ . . .

Meanwhile, her life outside work is complicated by her best male friend, the kids’ dad, and the TV repair man – all of whom seem to be taking an interest in her.

Will Cait ever be able to answer the enormous pile of mail she receives every day? Will she ever stop being irritated by her strangely flirty ex-husband and his awful new girlfriend? And, after all this time, will she be able find true love?

More About the Author

Fiona Gibson is the author of six novels, including Mum on the Run and The Great Escape, both published by Avon. She grew up in a Yorkshire village called Goose Eye, before working on Jackie and Just Seventeen magazines - in those heady pre-internet days when it was pretty exciting to get a free plastic mirror taped to the front of your magazine. A complete mag addict, Fiona went on to edit More! magazine, where she introduced the infamous Position of the Fortnight. After having her twin sons and daughter, she started to write fiction, usually at night with the house full of toddlers and builders. It was a sort of escape.

After spending her twenties in London, Fiona now lives in Lanarkshire, Scotland. When she's not writing, she's usually walking or running with her collie cross, Jack, whilst trying to wrestle her plotlines into some semblance of order. She's a pretty poor speller but loves nothing better than starting a brand new book. It's the middle part that's the tricky bit.

Under the byline Fiona Foden, Fiona also writes children's novels for Scholastic - Life Death & Gold Leather Trousers (2011) and Cassie's Crush (July 2012). She has finally learnt how to bake cakes.

5.0 out of 5 stars This mummy says thanks.... 10 July 2009
I have never written a review prior to this but I just had to write one for Mummy said the F word. It is a truely fabulous book - feel good and funny but with moments that had me with tears streaming down my face. I am sleep deprived and it's so unputdownable that I actually stayed up past midnight (by choice!!) to read it. If you are looking for something entertaining, funny and rather touching, I would highly recommend this book. Fiona Gibson's work is very empathetic - she makes me feel almost normal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Her best so far... 13 Mar 2008
I've read all of Fiona Gibson's books - loved them! But this is her best so far. Mummy Said... is not only funny and insightful, it is an emotional ride through relationships and motherhood that will resonate with any other 30something female out there. Fiona tells a fantastic story, and without giving the game away, I was rooting for Cait to rise above the hiccups of her life and win her libido back - and her man! Can't wait for Fiona's next book. Hope it's coming soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny, very true 23 Mar 2008
By Wendy V
Fiona Gibson is on top-form with Mummy Said the F-Word, illuminating the awkward details and compromises of family life with great humour and humanity. The day I started the book, I wondered if I would approve of its heroine for being bitter about her ex, or letting slip the occasional swear-word in front of her children. But that day I attended a children's party, and overheard a (very lovely) mum talk about how she'd just been called in to see her own child's teacher because he had been caught using "language" and the suspicion was that he had picked it up at home. It could have come straight from the pages of this novel, and I realised that Gibson's theme here will strike a cord with every parent who does not claim to be perfect (and which of us can, in all honesty?)

It's a cracking read, with a pacy plot and engaging very well-drawn characters (including the children, who, as ever with Gibson's acute eye for detail, and ear for dialogue, are entirely believable). And goodness it made me laugh. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars So funnily refreshing! 11 Sep 2008
This book has captured my attention and humour for the last week or so with me taking sneaky reads when I should be doing 'motherly' and 'wifey' things and even forgoing my slob in front of the TV in the evening to read what happens to Caitlin!
It is such a refreshingly honest look at motherhood - I can identify with so much of the book and can, amusingly, recognise certain 'mother-types' that Fiona describes (the ones that would not allow toxic plastic toys over their threshhold, that feed only organic veg freshly grown in their backgarden, whose children never embarrass them in public etc.etc. ....
Fiona's perception on family life is amazing and her main character's honesty at failing so often as a mum is so reassuring. But it is also poignant with the account of Caitlin's mum in a Care Home not able to recognise her own daughter due to her dementia - and yet heartwarming when a light comes on within her later on in the book. It also talks of a son being torn by the separation of his parents which breaks your heart.
There have been very moving moments when I have been close to tears, great hilarity at the way Fiona describes just how kids (and grown-ups!) are, and excitement at not knowing who Caitlin will end up with.
I highly recommend this book to all mothers who can laugh at themselves!

5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous 15 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A really good book which is very obviously written by a real mother who knows all the stresses and strains of parenting, and doesnt think it's all like the glossy magazines. Not only that, but very accurate with what it's like to be a single mother, and not the usual sterotype stuff. A single parent in fact has to do twice the job with twice the criticism. It charts the story of Caitlyn and her difficult 3 children in getting a new job, seperating from her cheating husband and doing the very best she can with what she's got. Will it work out OK? That's the question! Very funny, an easy read and superbly written, I would definitely recommend this to parents who know the secrets which she is talking about, and to people without kids who would like an insight!

I just liked the uncomplicated story that relaxed me. It flowed and time passed without realising. Sometimes it is good to read something that is a good story which is what it is. Life is so difficult these days that this book made me feel warm inside. Thank you Fiona Gibson.
