*Real* Egyptology for a change!,

As an Egyptologist I am always sceptical about the content of any book with a glossy cover glamourously featuring the pyramids or any other item of famed treasure, half expecting the author to present themselves as another Graham Hancock.However, 'The Mummy in Ancient Egypt: Equipping the Dead for Eternity', is not only a highly resourceful reference book for Egyptologists studying the material aspects of funerary religion in ancient Egypt, but also makes a fantastic read (and I add accurate at this point - there is very little of the glamourisation so often encountered in popular books and television series which falsify the true essence of Egyptology) for the general reader. If one is simply interested in learning something about ancient Egyptian funerary art or the religious ideas behind mummification then this book is a really good place to start. The information provided is reliable and presented in an interesting and easy to understand manner. It is not only incredibly well illustrated with photographs and drawings of mummies, jewellery, masks, coffins, sarcophagi and canopic equipment, but has large colour plates of the finest artefacts. It also discusses the development of mummification, amulets and jewellery, masks, coffins, sarcophagi and canopic equipment and their varying visual forms and the religious beliefs behind their iconography. I really can't find a way to express the value this book, which is so interesting to read and highlights many of the issues that makes Egyptology so interesting to the general reader, yet it also provides ample evidence for the scholar.

Those who are interested in Ancient Egyptian mummification practices will find this book fascinating. Each aspect of the funerary practices is described in great depth, following its development through different periods of Egyptian history. It is a very detailed account, with lots of illustrations. Absolutely great analysis of the royal mummies; fascinating photos - which, I admit, might gross some people out, but that's what makes them so great.

This book delivers on what it promises--It is a readable and fascinating book on Egyptian funeral practices (mummies, sarcophagi, accoutrements, etc.), and how they changed over thousands of years. There is a useful appendix with a table summarizing how different aspects of funeral practice changed over the course of Egyptian civilization. The photography is excellent, though some of the illustrations of the mummies themselves are a bit spooky!

This is a very interesting book with excellent illustrations and very informative. It is a hard book to put down. It is highly recommended even for someone who has a slight interest in the subject of mummification.
