Romantic comedy from writer-director Lawrence Kasdan ('The Big Chill', 'French Kiss'). Dr Mumford (Loren Dean), leading psychologist in the idyllic town of Mumford, is a very special man. His inventive approach and precise insights have ensured that most of the town have sought his advice at one time or another. But when he starts treating the beautiful Sofie Crisp (Hope Davis) he begins to re-examine his own past and this, along with an hilarious chain of events involving his other patients, turns his whole world upside down.

I really love this film. The characters are beautifully drawn, and it has some genuinely funny moments. Not many films can claim to be both funny and genuinely moving, but this film does both wonderfully.

I'm getting old now, and have had a love affair with cinema all that time.
This is the best movie ever made, a real hidden gem. Pitch perfect performances from Loren Dean and Hope Davis and subordinate staff, including my first look at Zooey Descanel.
The scene where they deliver the newspapers is heart rendingly plangent.
I'm a retired police officer and the scene at the end of the movie resonates with so much truth, it made me laugh out loud in the theatre. It was such a wry comment on what actually does happen it showed a true understanding of life and humour on the part of the writers, film maker and players.
You can watch this film over and over again and get more and more out of it each time, a true classic.

Another good Kasdan film, quirky and enjoyable, well-acted and very attractively filmed in a charming small town. Not ideal for everyone - I'd almost buy it for my mother, but the weird minor subplot about a lonely scientist making robot sex dolls really rules that out, sadly.

Just an insignificant good movie
The DVD is disappointingly sparse, but the movie is worth watching. The type of movie that does without hype and fanfare; if you've got nothing better on, stick it in and enjoy. Read more
