I am an expat living in Mumbai and have found this my absolute essential guide to Mumbai. We live out in the suburbs but any trip to down town this book is in my bag. We have found the reviews to be accurate, the recommended restaurants to be great and the suggested walks work out very well. The street name convertor is a big help as my born and bred Bombay driver does not know the 'new' Indian names!!!

Just for the record Chimanlals is also our favourite Mumbai shop.

I would seriously recommend this book to anyone travelling through or coming to stay in Mumbai.

This is quite a useful guide if you are only in Mumbai for a short time. The maps are ok and it's easy to carry in your pocket - much bigger than the guides which cover a wider area.

Ignore entire entertainment section 4 April 2009
By C. White - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Okay, I admit, this book is a great size to carry with you everywhere. It even has some useful maps (which you can buy for about 10Rs from any street corner). However, I can count at least 4 times where we jumped in a cab trying to find a bar or club in this book and it didn't exist!

Addresses were wrong, opening times were wrong, descriptions of restaurants and bars were wrong, directions were unreliable. It got so ridiculous that if any information was wrong elsewhere we would joke that it must have come from the lonely planet. The ONE occasion (when we were giving the book one last chance!) when we were trying to find the Red Light club, the directions provided in the Lonely Planet were completely wrong, we only found the club because we'd spent so much time in that area of town that we spotted the "red light" (great place by the way).

I usually am quite happy with lonely planet publications, but would leave this one alone unless you find it humorous getting a 45 minute cab to a place that doesn't exist.

Terrific, though slightly out of date 21 Jan. 2008

This book was my essential companion every day for 10+ days in Mumbai. It is the right size to ride in your hip pocket throughout the day. It has helpful, well drawn maps (the only thing better would be a local street map), several good walking tours, and its recommendations for top sights are worthwhile. I found some of the shopping information to be out of date as the book is a few years old now. If you are only in Mumbai for a couple of days, the Mumbai section of the regular Lonely Planet books is sufficient. But if you are there for longer, get this book -- and enjoy your stay in this unique city!
