Having been involved with an investigation into smart card use for some time, I've been surprised at the scarcity of decent literature on the subject.
Some of the larger volumes are largely full of impenetrable technical information - fine if you want to know about asymmetric cryptographic algorithms, for example - not too helpful when you just need to know about the smart card choices and suitability for your application. Amazing how one major work manages to avoid naming a single smart card manufacturer - not much use in the real world.
Mike Hendry's book is bang up to date and most importantly is accessible - i.e. you will be able to obtain a good overview of the topic without any prior knowledge. I wish I'd had this book when I first started looking at smart cards a couple of years ago.
