3.0 out of 5 stars Better than one star 23 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is not as bad to warrant a one star. Decently written, nice formatting and the material is good enough. Trouble is, while the multithreading part is useful, and is actually quite good (like using events instead of callbacks, and hints of queues) its actually quite basic, and would need some actual usage examples, as its not really well connect to the rest of the chapters. However, the particle system example is using OpenMP, but in general, multithreading issues take only like two chapters from the book, and while they are good, i don't specially feel they are really connected to the rest of the book. Remaining chapters are decent DirectX stuff, including FX, even has particle basics and terrain rendering.
Overall its not a bad book, nice intro into some APIs, but this is not a book on engine design.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not really multi-threaded engine design 16 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
This book does not cover the design of a multi-threaded game engine. It presents a very general overview of multi-threading (which you can get from a general internert search) and then some basics of game engine design. It certainly doesn't do what it says on the cover.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely dreadful. Don't waste your money. 7 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The "multi-threaded game engine" aspect is laughable. A short coverage on threading. Much less anything about structuring a modern engine for it. The other 85% is general DirectX stuff you can get elsewhere.
