This book was first published in 1995. The Further Reading links at the back include a reference to a book with the same title, author and publisher from 1970, so it may be assumed that this is a re-hash of the earlier work, although it is not published as a re-edition, and this is what bothers me. The book was re-printed in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 so it is obviously popular, and rightly so, being an informative guide to the two islands. However, having sold so many copies, one would think that the author and/or the publisher would have taken the trouble to update some of the factual information.
While most of the details about the island - geographical, historical and biological - remain unchanged, certain other aspects DO evolve, for example the M.V. Isle of Mull, the regular CalMac ferry between Oban and Craignure, now only carries a maximum of 70 cars, while the Lochaline-Fishinish boat now carries 36 (instead of the 12 mentioned in the book), and the Oban-Lismore ferry only carries five cars. It can be readily appreciated that these figures are important for prospective travellers. Similarly, the CalMac ferry timetable for Gourock-Dunoon shows 45 minutes, not the 15-20 mentioned in the book, which could affect timing for connections further up the coast.
Having said that, I have been using the book in preparation for a forthcoming visit to Mull, and have found it to be full of fascinating information with excellent photographs. Once again, some of the information is outdated - for example certain of the fossil-beds on the island have been virtually stripped of their treasures - but on the whole the book is well-structured, and instructive. I fully expect to have it to hand throughout our travels round the island, although I will have OS maps with me, as the map provided in the book is rather sparse on detail. I'd certainly give it four stars out of five, deducting points for the fact that it's not been updated in at least 16 years.
