Slightly on the negative side though, the actually storyline is pretty pedestrian and although it ticks along nicely enough it doesn't have that vital hook to really capture the audience and get them caught up it in all.
Although I wouldn't call the cast "all star" by any stretch of the imagination, it's one of those films at which you are constantly recognising actor after actor, and then try to spend the next few minutes racking your brain to remember where you've seen him before. "Oh look, it's thingy from that other film.....um thingy!" is a repeated phrase!
Nick Nolte can play the gravelled voiced hard cop as well as any and he gives another fine turn here. Well supported by two of the Reservoir Dogs, Michael Madsen and Christopher Penn and in particular, special mention to the other member of the squad, Chazz Palminteri who gives as fine performance as Nolte's partner.
As I say plenty of other faces to recognise including Andrew McCarthy, John Malkovich and Rob Lowe.
For a huge slice of 50's nostalgia then you really can't beat it. Classic cars, superb suits and hats and a real feel for the beginning of the Cold War suspicion that was starting to run through all aspects of American life.
The fact that I bought this goes to prove there must be something good about it: a mood perhaps? a message? or is it just a good thriller with a twist?
In a nutshell it's a murder mystery set in the 50's with the good guys (the cops) biting off more than they can chew in the shape of the military.
A great cast, interesting script, well shot & directed (Lee Tamahori has directed some of my favorites)- it's not brilliant but it has that feel........
Evocative of the 50's- great cars, snazzy suits and everyone chain smokes! There's a feeling that something rotten lies beneath the veneer. Even the good guys have things to hide.
It's very slick (someone else mentions 'The Untouchables' & I agree) and you could easily dismiss this as a 'star formula' film with the requisite 'emotional' scenes, some violence & a political message.
It's cheap, it's easy to watch so buy it and make your own mind up!
