For beginners like me looking to convert:
I used to dread shaving as got thick'ish beard and sensitive skin and after looking into DE (double edge) shaving with its acclaims and thought it was worth a go. So having just converted to DE, I like it a lot! Its actually a good experience shaving now!
Wanting to ditch the Gillette fusion, I started with a supermarket bought cheap Wilkinson's razor and brush(which I already had). My first time (still using Gillette's gel) I looked like a 'victim'. Second time I used a Palmolive soap stick and it was a far better experience and shave. I used the soap stick straight on face and brushed on to create lather but the lather can equally be done on a bow, just happens at the time I didn't have one. Still the result was so good that using a stick, I'd probably still put it on face straight.
The soap stick at < £1 at Tesco of Lloyds pharmacy thrashes the gel no end (and will last and last) and see why people refer to gels as gunk! Really is.
As I liked it I upgraded the whole set thinking i'd improve the shave somewhat. Got Taylor of old bond (TOBS) shaving cream (£10), TOBS after balm (£12), a stand with bowl (£24), 100 derby (£9) + also subsequently got 100 astra blades (£10) (rated better but I can't confirm yet), a TOBS pure badger brush (20) and this new razor (£25) after quite a bit of research. The lathering is now a nice experience. And what an upgrade its been.Read more ›
The chances are that if you are researching this product then you are either thinking about making the switch to a safety razor from a cartridge style razor or you currently own the 6.99 wilkinson sword plastic safety razor and are trying to work out if there is any value in upgrading to an all metal safety razor. Either way you are likely to be new to this type of product.
Let me make this simple for you. Don't waste any more time researching all the other thousands of safety razors and simply stop right here and buy this one. For the price, you simply will not find anything better and unless you are prepared to stretch your budget to £50+.
The Muhle will give you a close comfortable shave superior to any cartridge razor. It's pretty gentle as far as safety razors go; as long as you use decent shaving soap then you are pretty unlikely to slice your face into little pieces.
I would recommend investing in some decent blades from feather.
The only factor to consider here is that the razor is relatively short compared to some others, if this may be an issue then you might want to hold it and decide for yourself before purchasing.
Don't scroll through the 400 positive reviews searching for the one bad one to convince you not to buy this razor. There is a reason why the average review of this razor is 5 stars and at £25 you cannot go wrong.
I have contacted the seller and will wait for a response but have bought a Merkur 34C in the meantime.
The razor looks uber-sleek in an old-fashioned sort of way, weighs nicely in the hand and the mirror-polished chrome finish is a pleasure to look at; cuts an impressive figure (no pun intended) in the bathroom and feels like it's going to last for years. It also looks fearfully sharp with the blade it comes with, but ll in all it's much more gentle than I'd have expected. Even an absolute beginner like me managed a smooth, rather effortless first shave with just one pass with the grain, no irritation whatsoever and no nicks - not even on my bulging Adam's apple, where I would ALWAYS get nicks and cuts with any cartridge razor I've used. I have a goatee and being able to actually see the edge of the blade also means that it's a lot easier to shape the edges of any existing facial hair.
Plus, I've found that the whole ritual of wet shaving is quite fun - a great way to start the day with boatloads of confidence or to unwind at the end of a hard day's work.
Well worthy of five stars and definitely recommended to anyone who wants to try this way of shaving.
