I have been reading texts on Islam and the Prophet for most of my life, but this is the book which I have always remembered and gained most satisfaction from. It is rich in detail, but the author's excellent style and narrative makes this hefty book hard to put down. Perhaps it is his BBC journalism rigour, but my point is that most Islamic books, unfortunately do not pay enough attention to the reader and make the reading experience quite challenging. The knowledge is there, but the method is not so easy. This book is a rare exception, as it manages to combine academic rigour, with an almost novel-like style. Pleased to recommend this.
