5.0 out of 5 stars make someone happy 3 July 2009
By angie
Format:Hardcover
i gave this as a birthday present to my sister and she was delighted. She has got into muffins big time. She has tried several of the recipes and found them to be straight forward producing excellent results each time. Her husband also gave me a big thank you too. So double brownie points or should i say "muffin" points to me!

Format:Hardcover
I've used this book on several occassions the apricot and marzipan magic are delicous and my niece and I must say husband loved the coloured candies. They are all sooooo yummy and yet so simple to make. I regularly take a batch to work just as a treat, I'm becoming known as the cake lady.

5.0 out of 5 stars Varied range of contents and UK user friendly 23 Mar 2010
By Claptonian TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
There is a wide range of sweet and savoury recipes in this book including some unusual combinations. All of the ingredients used are readily available in most supermarkets, admittedly some only seasonally but that is to be expected. There are some recipes that I most certainly will try and others that simply do not appeal, but that is not the fault of the author.

Well illustrated throughout, there is something here for everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected gem 6 Oct 2011
By Seren Ade HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I picked this book up during a school book sale, thinking it looked quite interesting - and I'm really glad that I did as it has turned out to be a real unexpected gem.

The book begins with a general introduction to the muffin-making process, including 3 'golden rules:

1) Combine the dry ingredients in one bowl, the wet ingredients in another - and then add together.
2) Sieve the dry ingredients well as the best muffin mixes are really, really light.
3) When you combine the wet and dry ingredients - DON'T OVER-MIX

All of the recipes in the book are basically designed to yield 12 muffins (from a medium-sized muffin tin) and are divided up into 5 types of muffin: easy ('faff free') recipes, child-friendly recipes, recipes aimed at adults, savoury recipes and seasonal recipes.

Taste and appearance-wise the recipes I've tried have worked out very well, but I do find that at times (particularly with the savoury recipes) the expected yield of 12 is rather optimistic - the cheese and onion recipe yielded 11 slightly stingy muffins and a Southern US-style chilli cornmeal recipe only made 8 decent-sized muffins (with a bit of 'top' to them to differentiate them from fairy cakes!). A recipe for apple muffins by contrast produced 12 good-sized muffins. I'm not entirely convinced by the Fireworks night muffin (this is basically a chocolate muffin with a sparkler stuck in the top!) and putting an Easter-themed Simnel cake-style muffin in a peat pot to present it is just a bit grim.

In reference to the one-star review which complains about the quantity of oil used in the recipes: there is no more oil than you would use butter in making many other cakes... it's all about making a light, loose batter.

I've made both sweet and savoury muffins, eaten them at home and given them as gifts. I'm not usually a very enthusiastic baker, but am delighted with the book and the results. I would agree with one reviewer that it can seem like there's a lot of sunflower oil in some of the recipies, but to be fair, there is no butter so you will need some form of fat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Muffin Magic 16 Aug 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book looks appealing - the presentation is very good.

Many of the recipes were a little different from the norm although the ingredients are not difficult to find on market shelves. The illustrations
looked good enough to eat - cant wait to try the Smoked Salmon recipe!

3.0 out of 5 stars making muffins 23 April 2013
By Mrs
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Muffins are supposed to be so easy to make but I never seem to get it right. I thought this book would help me find the secret but a lot of the receipes asked for veg oil which I felt made the muffins taste oily and unpleasant. I now use melted butter but somehow the perfect muffin is still elusive
