4.0 out of 5 stars More of a toy than a book 20 April 2009
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
one of a series from 'Campbell Books'.

Colourfully illustrated, this particular one has an oceanic theme.

'Follow the poem, do the activities, or use the magnets to invent your own stories - plenty of fun for everyone!'

From the back cover:-

'Dive in and enjoy hours of underwater fun with this amazing book!
Join Diver Dave and a host of friendly sea creatures in their exciting deep sea adventure!'

This cleverly designed package measures approx. 25.5 cm x 20.5 cm, and comes complete with a bright yellow carrying handle and strong clasp, so has that added dimension of being portable!
The various 'fishy' magnets are in a plastic sleeve on the front cover, accessed by a cardboard pull tab from inside.
Durable covers open to 8 sturdy pages, in 2-page spread format.
As the magnetic pages do not include the inside cover pages, only 6 physically have that magnetic touch!

The front cover shows the contents as 'with over 15 magnets' - my copy has 18.

Keeping to the under-the-sea theme, the relatively small text 'swims' along the pages, top or bottom - a couple of lines on each, along with a suggested basic activity - so there is still plenty of space on the page to make a picture with the magnets.

I am not in the habit of putting an age guide on picture books, as my career has shown that children vary tremendously in their reading ability (depending on what experience they have had at home and of nursery/pre-school etc) but it should be noted that the smallest fish magnet in this set measures approx. 3 cm x 1.5 cm, and the back cover clearly states that this product is not suitable for children under 36 months, because of the small parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great portable entertainment for the kids 28 April 2009
By David Burton VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
As a kind of combination story book and magnetic playset, Muddle Ocean is a well thought out, well presented item that appealed immediately to my kids.
The carry handle means it's easy to take with you, while the design of the compartment for the magnetic pieces is designed so that when properly close, it is fully secure, and nothing is going to just fall out.
The artwork in the book and on the pieces is nice, friendly and attractive, and while talking through the story, the children are guided to make use of the piece on each page, illustrating the 'story' while it's being read to them, and this engaging them in the story meant that they wanted to play with it again immediately after it was put away. An excellent product

Initial impressions were good, with the look and feel of being of a well designed product. The book got a thumbs up for the handle and clip at the bottom (time will tell how durable they are) and also the see through bubble on the front which not only creates the impression of the creatures being in the ocean, but will hopefully help prevent the creatures being lost when not in use.

However the book at only three pages or you could say 3 'scenes' long was a bit short and didn't hold the attention for more than 15 minutes, so although this may make the book more bulky and cost more, a couple of extra pages would improve this product greatly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well constructed and great fun 25 April 2009
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
My two and a half year old son has been carrying this around with him for a week now, and he absolutely loves it.

It is sturdily construced and comes as a kind of suitcase with a handle and a clasp, both of which are suitable for small hands and easy to use. Inside the first page is a flap to pull. It opens to show a plastic cavity in which are an assortment of magnetic sea creatures and props which the child can use to move round from page to page of the story.

The book has a story about Diver Dave, who explores the undersea world. Each double page shows him on an adventure in which the child can participate using the magnetic creatures.

It is sturdy, fun and well made and there are a good number of magnets which means it won't be too disastrous when the inevitable happens and one or two go missing.

My only gripe is that some of the magnets are quite intricately shaped and have begun to bend and crease under the punishing regime of a two year old's deep sea adventures. There will be tears in this house when the sword fish's sword eventually snaps off.

That aside, it is one of the better quality activity stories I have come across and I will certainly be looking out for more like this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...ok, but... 15 Oct 2009

...could have been so much better. The art style is great and easy for young kids to pick up and play with, bright colours throughout and the big thick pages are easy for little hands to turn.
The problem for me is the lack of substance combined with magnets that don't work very well kind of spoils the fun for me.
I think some more information about the sea creatures and the environments they live in would help hold the attention of children that eventually get bored of sticking the magnets. I'm not expecting huge details but at least some info would have been welcome.
As for the magnets they work ok but I found that after a while a few became a bit bent and would struggle to stick to the pages. A minor gripe but I am a little bored now of picking up tiny magnetic fish!
On the plus side the sliding window that holds the magnets works well if a little prone to being damaged.
