Product Description

The first Campbell and Carter mystery from one of the nation's best-loved crime writers

Lucas Burton hates the countryside. To him it's nothing but mud, muck and dead things. And he's right. When he turns up at a deserted farm in the middle of nowhere hoping to conduct a business deal he stumbles across the body of a girl. And that's just the start of his bad luck: Penny Gower from the local stables has spotted his silver Mercedes leaving the scene of the crime. Suddenly, for Lucas, things are looking very bleak indeed... Inspector Jess Campbell is on the case, but with few leads and a new superintendent, Ian Carter, breathing down her neck, she's beginning to feel the pressure. Then another dead body is found...

Having enjoyed Ann Granger's previous books featuring Mitchell and Markby, Fran Varady and Lizzie Martin I was looking forward to reading this new book, introducing a new pair of sleuths - Campbell and Carter.
I found the slightly menacing front cover appealing too, but should have heeded the old cliche about "not judging a book by it's cover" as I'm sorry to say that I didn't enjoy it as much as I had anticipated. Jess as a character didn't really come alive for me at all and the story felt weak and rather cobbled together. Hopefully, as this is just the first book in what I presume will be a new series, things will improve, but I doubt it will win any new fans for the writer, although I'll stick with it and remain hopeful that the next book won't let me down.

Shame about the title 26 Aug 2009
By Jane Baker VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
As a fan of the Mitchell and Markby series, not a lover of the Fran Vardy novels and indifferent to Lizzie Martin, I just loved this. Solid characters, a refreshing new team - Jess and Ian - good location. Well thought through plot with plenty of motives to add to the interest. It is not a staggering piece of detection like Anne Perry and nor is it intended to be. It's gentle sleuthing - modern-day Christie and a super read in these dreary summer afternoons of rain. I look forward to the next. Worst part is the very unattractive title. Murder at the farm? Second Murder at Cricket Farm? Or even Third Murder at Cricket farm to be accurate. But why nit-pick? A good, easy read for when one wants no demands - just to savour and enjoy.

This was the first novel I read by Ann Granger. The reason I bought it was because when I read the synopsis, it reminded me of M C Beaton's Agatha Raisin books, which also play in the Cotswolds, and which I am a big fan of.
The story started out quite promising, but sadly, it didn't have the fluid style in which Ms. Beaton tells her stories, and started to get somewhat boring rather quickly. I also couldn't really care less about the 2 main characters of the story - both didn't have much life in them. I read the book to the end, only to find out who the murderer was, but don't think I would ever pick it up again, and I don't think I will buy any future Campbell & Carter mysteries.
