I saw this production four times between May and September this year, and it was truly fantastic every single time. Set in the 80s - which I didn't think would work - this classic love/hate story is a hilarious production with some oustanding acting from Tennant, Tate and the supporting cast.
Parts that have traditionally been more 'touching' or 'softer' in previous productions ("But then there was a star danced, and under that was I born") have been interpreted in a more comic way here...but somehow it just works.
Just when you think Tate's Beatrice may irritate you with her overhysterical laughter, she crushes you with tears of despair. Just when you think Benedick can't be any more of an idiot in love, Tennant delivers some breathtaking speeches; he makes the language of Shakespeare so utterly accessible.
This play is sheer brilliance in its interpretation, from curtain up to the encore, and the joy in the faces of the cast as they take their bows is evident. Lots and lots of laughs, some tears and a fantastic final dance scene - this is not a play to be missed.
For those who want the DVD but can't wait until then, it's available for download at Digital Theatre - but get the DVD too, as there are bound to be extras!
