Format: Audio CD
This 9-CD Warner box set appeared in 2008 and was billed as a tribute to Mstislav Rostropovich, a giant of the cello, who had died a year earlier. The box brings together a large number of recordings made for the now effectively defunct Erato and Teldec labels (much-missed by me) made between 1969 and 1996. Throughout, the sound quality is very good to excellent and the playing superb. A small number of the works contained in the box remain available, either new or used, and I'll try and highlight these.

The first 2 CDs in the box were released by Teldec in 1993 and feature, on disc 1, mainly Baroque works from the likes of Tartini, Frescobaldi, Marcello, etc. Here the cello accompanies an organ. Generally quiet music. Vivaldi and CPE Bach are on CD 2.

CD 3 from 1987 features the Dvorak cello concerto and Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme. Rostropovich is backed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa.Dvorák - Cello Concerto; Tchaikovsky - Rococo Variations is another release of this recording.

CD 4 from 1987 has Prokofiev's Symphony-Concerto in E minor and Halffter's second cello concerto. Ozawa is the conductor with the LSO for the Prokofiev and Halffter himself with Orchestre National de France. CD 5 from 1988 and 1990 features Jolivet's second cello concerto, Shostakovich's first cello concerto and the relatively obscure cello concerto from Moret. We have a mixture of orchestras and conductors on this CD.
