While we rejoice at fine recordings released in budget boxes lately, it seems sometimes that nobody who knows anything about classical music checks these products before release.
For example: EMI released Giulini's orchestral excerpts of Berlioz' "Romeo & Juliet" keeping the same wrong order of the selections that was required by the limited LP sides. At least EMI's track list corresponded with what you heard.
But here, while Decca's track list and CD envelopes correspond with each other, that's not how they actually arranged the two Beethoven cello sonata CDs in this box. Decca kept the old LP ordering, but did not let us know.
All 5 sonatas are here, but NONE at the track claimed and SOME even on the other Beethoven CD.
Here is what Decca really put where:
CD #4: Tracks 1-2 is Op. 5/2. Tr 3-5 is op. 69
CD #5: Tr 1-2 is Op. 5/1. Tr 3-4 is op. 102/1. Tr 5-7 is op. 102/2
I've listened to most but not all of this set and found no other errors.
The sound quality and performances are excellent; as is well known.
Decca: Please hire a post-production supervisor who knows the music on these fine releases.
