Nobody I know in the UK has ever heard of Syl, but they are missing a treat, because this Mississippi soul/blues man is a real performer. His approach to the genre makes great listening. I am no officionado on the subject - I just like listening to him playing guitar and giving his all to a song. When I bought this album as a teenager, I did so because of the sweet-looking girl on the cover, but I simply did not "get" the sound then. I've since learned to appreciate the sound, and I really like this album.
The album comes from roughly the middle of his career (1982), and is the eighth of his albums. The music is for the most part upbeat and rocking with a great deal of soul, starting out with the fantastic titular track, and following with "Keep On Loving Me", "Groove Me", "You Don't Have To Go" and "Sweet Thing". Think Al Green and James Brown and you won't be a million miles away, but this has a more southern feel to it. The blues elements are there too, of course, with "They Can't See Your Good Side" and "It Ain't Easy",
I am not quite convinced that the digital remaster offers a better sound than the original 12 inch vinyl I have in my collection. Stronger, perhaps, but not richer. The CD has been hard to get for some time, but copies are around now (2010) so it is available at a sensible price at last.
