Book Description

The prosperous housing estate of Smithy’s Loam should be the epitome of middle-class respectability, but Mrs Pargeter decides that there’s something just a little bit odd about her new neighbours. When the central heating breaks down, she decides to contact the former occupants, the Cottons, for advice. But the address to which they should have moved doesn’t exist and Mr Cotton’s employers seem to have no trace of him. Then Mrs Pargeter finds an unposted letter addressed to the Church of Utter Simplicity – and begins to wonder, where are the Cottons?

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read whodunit 28 Feb. 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is the second in the Mrs Pargeter series, and although in my opinion not quite as good as the 1st novel (A nice class of corpse) it is still a good read. Mrs Pargerter is a 60+ year old woman whose late husband was a crook from whom she learnt a lot about crime. With a list of contacts from her late husband she manages to solve the riddle of a missing couple. It moves along fairly fast and is set in a middle class quite 'estate' in south east England.

Excellent murder mystery. It starts with a murder in a house in Smithy's Loam
a development of six executive homes. And guess who is just about to move
into the very house, yes Mrs. Pargeter. I found this hard to put down.
Simon Brett at his best.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly pleasant lightweight read 21 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mrs Pargeter buys a house on a small estate but becomes concerned about the fate of the previous owners.
Quite pleasant murder mystery (written around 30yrs ago) but,I felt, rather unconvincing. Reasonably priced on Kindle , but beware! - the following books in the series are more expensive yet no different in content!

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy-read amateur sleuth mystery 12 Jun. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mrs Pargeter moves into a suburban close and soon becomes interested in why the previous owner of her new home seemed to disappear without a trace.....

This is the second outing for Brett's Mrs Pargeter and although it is an easy-read 'cosy' mystery, I didn't think it had the appeal of other books in the series. The outcome of the book was a little too predictible and the characters in this upper-middle class suburban neighbourhood struck me as a little dull compared with those in the other books. An OK read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read though a rather fanciful plot... 5 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had tried the first Mrs Pargeter book and thought I would give the next one a go. The second is much better than the first, Mrs Pargeter develops a bit as a character and her late husband's business acquaintances add some colour to the book. The plot has a rather obvious flaw in it but this does not deter from its enjoyment. As ever, the writing is witty and lucid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Simply written to the point of imbecility. 12 Mar. 2013

Don't bother - short, boring and obvious. There is little more to say - if this is your first Mrs Pargeter it will almost certainly be your last. If you have read others, then you will be sick to death of the late Mr Pargeter by now. All in all, a waste of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very satisfying read. 9 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mrs Pargeter is a likeable widow with an interesting set of contacts, thanks to her husband's career one step sideways to the law. She moves to a close with plenty of secrets and a murder to be solved. Lovely characters as always.
