Product Description

Product Description

Mrs Moneypenny was a launch columnist in the Financial Times weekend magazine The Business, and now continues in Financial News. In 1992, with a newly minted MBA, not long married and with a young child, Mrs Moneypenny embarked on a career in the City. The next nine years were to see her initiated into the way the capital markets really operate. Moving to Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo, and producing two more children en route, by the time she left the Square Mile to set up her own business she had worked across most investment banking disciplines and with many extraordinary characters. This entertaining and enlightening book is a guide to what it's really like working in the city. It opens with Mrs Moneypenny applying for jobs, covers her rise through the ranks to her appointment to run an investment bank in Japan and finishes with her decision to trade in the long hours and big bonuses for more control over her life. Along the way you will learn how the City works, why people are paid so much money, and much, much more. If you want to know what every female stockbroker needs to carry in her handbag or how to survive a dawn raid, Mrs Moneypenny's lively guide to the City will be an eye-opener.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it, read it!, 21 May 2003

Well worth a read for anyone that's thinking of entering a career in the city. Give it to your nephews/nieces and God children before the banks do the milk rounds! As someone that worked in an investment bank with no idea what fund managers, sell side and buy side actually did it's been an entertaining and educational read (what can I say, I worked in IT!).....I've had a few odd looks from people on the train as I chuckled out loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tells it like it is, 28 Aug 2003
As a woman who has recently left the city having done some pretty similar jobs to Mrs Moneypenny I would certainly recommend anyone working in or interested in working in investment banking to read this book. Not only does it offer some hugely amusing opportunities for character spotting it is also a very useful guide to some of the more basic activities, jargon etc that you sometimes don't find out for years.
The author's analysis of women in banking is spot on - why are they more loyal, why do they always get paid less and why do they put up with it - and what sometimes happens if you get so fed up that you take your employers to court (not always good things...)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 2 Jun 2003
By A Customer
As someone who lives on the edge of the city and has lots of family and friends who work in it this book is an essential read to help interpret the strange ways of those that work in the financial sector. The book is highly amusing account of Mrs Moneypenny's time in the city and explains in simple terms how the city works. It's a must read for anyone that had ever been too intimidated to ask just what trading PA means.....if you want to know the answer I suggest you read the book.
