Product Description

Eddie's got a problem, someone's eating his friends...

It's 1962 and Mrs Mcgilvery is stalking and eating children in the squalid passageways of the Plough Street slums. Nine-year-old Eddie loses two of his friends to her in quick succession, but adults refuse to believe the children's claims that a child-eating hag is responsible for the savage deaths. To make matters worse, Eddie's vain attempts at defying McGilvery to save his friends have only angered the predator into singling him out to be the victim of a cat-and-mouse terror campaign.

Haunted and desperate, Eddie forges a friendship with Elaine, a girl no older than he but already burdened with the responsibility of looking after her three younger siblings and her feeble-minded grandmother. When Elaine is earmarked as the hag's next victim, Eddie is thrust into a desperate race against time to foil their seemingly invincible enemy and keep Elaine's fragile family together. But Mrs McGilvery's reign of terror threatens to endure in ways that Eddie can't begin to imagine.

The pain and tragic comedy of growing up, friendship in adversity and an insight into the true nature of 'imaginary' friends, 'Mrs McGilvery' is a Gothic tale of suspense, mystery and imagination from the inner city slums of 60's Britain.

I really enjoyed this book. Having roots in Birmingham it was really interesting to get a feel for 60's Birmingham when my parents would have lived there.

The book follows the exploits of a gang of street urchins who are hunted by an unusual character who is really quite disturbing! I'll not give too much away but its well worth a read.

The best thing about ebooks the ability to discover new authors for less than the cost of a bottle of pop from the shop and get several hours of enjoyment. I'll be looking out for other books by Colin Gibson as this seems to be his first release ( i looked ).

A real page turner 28 Aug 2011

This book held me in its innocent yet so sinister grip throughout the story. I could just picture the characters so vividly from Mr Gibson's descriptions and the era of the early sixties came across so evocatively too as I am only 3 years older than Eddie and can identify with those far off times!
It has a great, if totally unexpected ending and you will find it hard to put the book down till you have reached the last page. The aftertaste of Mrs McGilvery will stay with you for a very long time.

This is a great first book from this new author and my only criticism would be the numerous typos and grammatical errors that stood out for me but they overall did not detract from making this a wonderful read.

In thinking about what I'd compare this book to the only thing I could think of that is comparable is the movie Pan's Labyrinth. Similarly to PL this book is set in a very specific time and place, in this case the childhood and general community inhabiting Victorian era built slums just before they were levelled in the 60's and replaced by high rise estates.

The greatest similarity to PL though is that we have an engaging child protagonist who must face horrors simultaneously in the real world and in the supernatural world. This book does an excellent job of balancing its very realistic depictions of a gang of boys dealing with their poverty stricken day-to-day life (and is rather a memoir of those times) with the supernatural and suspenseful horror elements. Similarly to PL the book takes you to some very dark places as the main character must deal with the deaths of friends, local bullies, realisations about inequality and poverty, realisations about how little childhood some children enjoy, scary old people, scary crazy people, communal toilet facilities, visits to graveyards and the normal childhood fears of the dark and public humiliation. The fact that he and his friends are also being stalked by a child eating ghoul that only children can see doesn't help matters.

This is an engrossing read and is a unique blend of historic social realism with suspenseful fantasy/horror. Which makes it difficult to describe, hence the comparison to PL. Almost unbelievable that this a first effort by this author because it's extremely polished. This book will get into your bones.

A good read
Reminded me of the down to earth 70s horror story writers. Believable backdrops and gritty simplistic original horror. So what if there are a few errors in the text. Read more
