Product Description

Book Description

The inspiring story of a courageous young woman who worked to defeat the totalitarian Nazi regime during the Second World War.

Product Description

Gretel helped to protect fugitives hunted by the Gestapo, hid her Jewish doctor in her cellar and passed to the resistance secrets learned from her work on the Enigma encryption machine.

Finally arrested in 1945, she was liberated as the British Army advanced towards Hamburg. After the war, Gretel fell in love with a British officer. When he was transferred back to England, her determination and bravery were tested once more.

Format:Paperback
It was good to read a war story about a far from ordinary German citizen who actively fought against the Nazi regime in her own small way. Gretel believed that even the smallest act of sabotage or smallest contribution (in her case, her involvement in the black market) could help in the fight against the Nazis. Anything she could do to throw a spanner in the works of an evil system gave her immense satisfaction. You can only marvel at her courageous acts of defiance and bravery as she went about her daily life, never sure who could be trusted and always mindful not to draw attention to herself and those she sought to help. She lived a life fraught with danger and it's good that her story has been told.
A compelling, wonderful story.

A monumental moment! 19 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I am biased, it is about my mother but the stories told to me as a child are all the more remarkable when written in this way by Claudi. A moving story, one I am personally proud of and grateful to the Author for her efforts in making it public.

Read it, it's good!
