This entertaining and humourous book captured the interest of my children from beginning to end.In typical Ahlberg style Mrs Lather is an eccentric comical and larger than life character whose illogical exploits produce more adverse effects than she had first reckoned they might. Whoever heard of a laundry that refused to wash socks? After embarking upon this ludicrous course of action customers then bring other things for Mrs Lather to wash, like pets and even babies! Eventually Mrs Lather realises that washing plain ordinary laundry isn't so bad after all. This has an effective message to the children, that far off fields aren't always greener and at times we're better off sticking to those things we are familiar with.

I bought this book for my children 25 years ago and was pleased to find it amused my great nephew now. Can't wait to buy for grand daughter to share with!

I read this to my sons - now to my granddaughter and it still makes me (and her) smile. This whole Happy Families series is great to read aloud to a young child but then very soon they are able to read the stories themselves.

We bought this book for our daughter and now have it for our grandchildren. The story is delightful and grown-ups can stand having to read it again and again! The pictures are a pleasure too and bear close study.
