is well known for her flower collages, but this book makes it abundantly clear that there is so much more to learn about the life of this fascinating woman whose life spanned nearly the whole of the 18th century.

Katherine Cahill wirtes beautifully, and with affection, about her subject.

Anyone interested in the lifestyle of 18th century women will benefit from reading this book, which is amazing value considering the wealth of information it contains.

This book is ideal for those who would like a "taster" or distillation of Mary Delany's voluminous correspondence without expending money or shelf space on the three-volume set. Grouped by subject matter, Katherine Cahill scours the letters for mentions of food and dinners, receipts, clothes and outfits, and descriptions of parties and expeditions. I loved it, but missed some sort of final chapter of 'summing up' to draw all these various threads together at its close in a satisfying way.
