Book Description

1 Sep 2011
A year or two into her marriage, Elizabeth Darcy has much on her mind: she has still not produced an heir for Mr Darcy, there are preparations to be made for the Pemberly summer ball, and her youngest sister Lydia has been abducted by aliens. As Regency England sleepwalks towards tentacled oblivion, will she be able to reunite with her old foe Wickham and put a stop to their evil plans?

Meanwhile, in the East End of London, the repulsive Mr Collins is running a Mission for fallen women whilst his poor wife Charlotte has fallen under the malign spell of Lord Byron and is now a laudanum addict. But is everything at the Mission all that it seems? What is Mr Darcy doing there? And why are there strange lights in the sky over Lady Catherine de Bourgh’s seat at Rosings?

Probably the most unconventional sequel to a Jane Austen novel ever written; certainly the funniest.

Review

Mrs Darcy versus the Aliens is probably the strangest and most refreshing Austen sequel I've read in a while. (Kelly Yanke Deltener examiner.com )

Review

This book is much funnier than the original, and it has more monsters. I laughed like a mentalist. (Scott Pack )

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone Needs a Few Tentacles 2 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Probably the funniest book since the original Pride and Prejudice - it's just a shame we've had to wait since 1813 to get our hands on it -- but that's OK, because it's here now!
What to say... everyone loves tentacles but this book isn't just about aliens, oh no. There's also the real story of Jane Austin, and an eclectic mix of historical folk including Francis Crick, Humphry Davy, and a very badly behaved Byron. Oh, and a stallion.

It's the kind of book that makes you read lines out loud to unsuspecting family members, who will now be getting it for Christmas.

Fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed myself insensible 25 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Not just aliens, but ghosts, secret agents and even a few down-at-heel zombies populate Jon Pinnock's uproarious sequel to Miss Austen's demure original. It's a much more difficult trick to pull off than it looks, but don't be deceived by the slapstick tone and snappy writing style. Beneath the constant stream of jokes, spoof-Regency dialogue and pop-culture references burns a fiendishly clever plotting mechanism (just count how many story strands are going on in some places). If Peter Cook and Douglas Adams had ever got the chance to collaborate on an episode of The Simpsons, the outcome might have been half as good as this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tentacles and Aliens and Muslin, Oh My! 24 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
What can I say about this book? I approached it with fear and trepidation, expecting it to be every bit as awful as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Classic Regency Romance-now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem! (Quirk Classics) (which was an interesting conceit, but has a terrible execution! The prequel Dawn of the Dreadfuls (Quirk Classics): Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was considerably better.]

How wrong was I? Very, that's how. I never expected to find another human being with similar interests in both the works of Jane Austen and popular culture, but Pinnock obviously is such a person. I laughed out loud at lines like "the truth is out there, but it is not yet universally acknowledged" and at references to HP Lovecraft, The Fast Show, the X-Files, and any number of others.

This novel is not just a line of gags one after the other, though; it's well plotted and thought out, pacy and full of twists. I read it quickly, enjoyed it to the end and will probably have to re-read it soon, to make sure I didn't miss any of the references... The nerd in me would never live that down!

Highly recommended for nerds and neo-Georgians alike.
