I find it amazing that I was able to get a free copy of a book, which was originally published in 1861, instantly sent through cyberspace to my Kindle Fire HD in order to help me with background information as I write an essay. I did notice somebody saying something in their review about being told to "go out and catch your hare", but I believe I am correct in saying that to "catch" a hare is not to go out and catch it, but to grab the fur in order to separate it from the flesh. Anyway, that aside, I am very pleased to have been able to get a copy instantly - and might well purchase a hard copy to help me with my further studies. Thank you Amazon Kindle for providing such a good service.

Doesn't have an index and doesn't have some essential recipes. Gave this as a present and it has disappointed. A full edition not much more money, but would be worth spending.

What not to like about Mrs Beeton? A genuine introduction to late 19C middle class life. How to address a Duke; how to cope with your servants; how to buy a property; even a few recipes that you may care to try: January 1887 - dinner for 18 persons - 22 dishes in four courses so you could knock that up in no time with only a cook and a couple of kitchen maids.

However, this is a wonderful piece of history and it reads very well.

This is not only a cook book, but an interesting insight into the victorian world of class and servants. Mrs Beeton writes in a somewhat superior style about everything from management of staff to the origin of foods. I think some of her explanations are outdated butinteresting all the same. Most of the book is given over to recipes such as meals for family or formal occasions. You might find them boring or perhaps try them at home !,,

I knew this title from my childhood, a well thumbed copy was on the bookshelf. I remember dipping into it on for research for cookery exams and other advice.

As an adult what I like about the book is the value of the social history. An insight into customs and values that are still present in to-days society. It is a very good reference book for finding out how to do things, i.e. how to lay a table for a formal dinner, how to remove a stain. Facts like this are combined with recipes, even recipes of how to make polish!

This book will remain a useful guide to me, I would recommend it to any yummy mummy or domestic goddess, it could even benefit the new age man who shares domestic tasks.

Good old fashion wisdom even for the twenty first century. Worth a read, a very good reference book and it is free for the Kindle

I had often heard this book mentioned and am very pleased to have had a chance to read it. It makes a fascinating look at the past, all the details of the different servants' duties, for instance, plus incredibly detailed recipies for all occasions, and some (rather odd to modern eyes) background information. I didn't find it difficult to navigate through the pages. The page numbers given in the index don't apply to the Kindle version, of course, but give an idea where to start looking.
