Amazon Review

Mrs Armitage and her faithful dog, Breakspear, set off for a day's surfing. As they wait for the perfect wave, they discover there is a whole host of items they cannot manage without--a sun shade, a megaphone, a boat hook, food and drink--which gives Mrs Armitage a wonderful workout as she swims back and forth from the shore. When the big wave finally comes, not only do Mrs Armitage and Breakspear ride it in style, they also manage to rescue a little girl who has strayed out of her depth.

With exuberance and style Quentin Blake relates Mrs Armitage's tale, turning a simple surfing trip into an extravaganza filled with humour and delight. The simple, repetitive text and the colourful, humorous illustrations combine to make this a delight to read aloud and share with young children. (Ages 3 to 7). --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

The ever ready Mrs Armitage has hit the surf, and she's all kitted out for a Californian slither with her custom-built surfboard. All she wants now is the big wave... --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Mrs Armitage is a great creation - funny, mad, brave, quite sexy, independent, and knocking on a bit. I love all the Mrs Armitage books, but this one may be the funniest. It also feels authentically seasidey. Mrs A and her dog Breakspear spend all day preparing for the Big Wave and make the most of it. Nothing ever gets them down, she is endlessly optimistic and cheerful. The repetition is a delight for little kids and the wit makes the repetition a delight for their parents.

The eccentric Mrs Armitage and her dog Breakspear are at the sea-side for a spot of surfing. But the wait for the big wave leads to those moments wherein home comforts are craved for. The energetic prose and dialogue cannot fail to amuse young listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars funny surfing 4 May 2010
As in Mrs.A. Queen of the Road and Mrs.A.On Wheels, Quentin Blake succeeded in an amusing story and an interesting illustrated for children with the comforting yet funny rescue of the little Miranda.
