Product Description

Review

'Simple, exact prose catches the vernacular flavour of the period and the prismatic personalities of the characters as they lay themselves bare to the sins of the flesh, the tricks of religious pretence and society's stifling order. Rogers is a vivid and intelligent writer whose work deserves a wide audience here' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

GUARDIAN 2.5.91

There is a rich vein of comedy in this beautifully written book which deals so profoundly with the attractions of idealism and the confusion between sexual and religious feeling. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This compelling narrative is told from the perspective of four very different women, who live and work for the mysterious and charismatic minister, Mr Wroe. The lives and loves of the four women emerge through the tangled affairs of Wroe and his strange church. Although it is a work of fiction, the historical aspects (the history of the church, the place where the women would have lived) are meticulously researched and feel incredibly real. Part mystery, part history, part romance, this book really does have something for everyone. The book caused a stir a few years ago when it was serialised by the BBC. If you like novels with strong characters and vivid, narrative voices you will love this book.

An utterly boring book; surely it had to be written by a sick writer irrespective of her academic achievement and the standing of her father? It left me feeling nauseated. The concoction of religion, sex, virginity, inquisitiveness, and suffrage, is more akin to a confessional of some past life trauma. I would rather trash this book than take it to a charity shop. It sells on Amazon (used) for 1p; one wonders how many of those sellers who purchased it never completed reading it; probably most. Why do some find it so exhilarating that they are prompted to rate it with a 5*; why don't they be more truthful instead?
