This compelling narrative is told from the perspective of four very different women, who live and work for the mysterious and charismatic minister, Mr Wroe. The lives and loves of the four women emerge through the tangled affairs of Wroe and his strange church. Although it is a work of fiction, the historical aspects (the history of the church, the place where the women would have lived) are meticulously researched and feel incredibly real. Part mystery, part history, part romance, this book really does have something for everyone. The book caused a stir a few years ago when it was serialised by the BBC. If you like novels with strong characters and vivid, narrative voices you will love this book.
