Product Description

Product Description

An autobiography of Ian Wright, the British footballer who shot to prominence in 1985 when he joined Crystal Palace from Greenwich Borough Services. Six years later he joined Arsenal, and has been the club's top goal-scorer every season since.

From the Back Cover

Sharp as a tack, and a no-nonsense, goal-grabbing, livewire striker with an electric pace; a rifling penalty taker, defender's nightmare, and a role model for youngsters as well as fashion guru and swooning ladies' pin-up.

That's the one and only Ian Wright. Otherwise known as Mr. Wright.

Spotted playing park's football in his mid-twenties, Wright proved to be a late starter when he joined Crystal palace in 1985, but his rise since then has been meteoric. Little wonder Nike wanted him to endorse their products. Remember the headlines behind the posters 'Behind every great goalkeeper there's a ball from Ian Wright'? As winner of the Golden Boot award for 1991/92, Wright snatched first prize from Gary Lineker with virtually the last kick of the season.

Wright does not forget where he comes from – coincidentally the same South London estate as his friend and former clubmate David Rocastle – and it was a big decision of his to move across the Thames to join Arsenal in a £2.5 million transfer deal. At Highbury, he has been the club's top scorer ever since, his goals instrumental in leading the Gunners to a unique Cup 'Double' in 1992 and a European Cup-Winners' Cup trophy two years later.

Despite frustrating times on the substitutes' bench for England, Wright has kept up the pressure for a regular place in the starting line-up. Now playing better than ever in a revitalised Arsenal team containing stars such as Dennis Bergkamp and David Platt, Ian Wright is an inspiration for countless thousands, young and old, both inside and outside the game which he lights up as few others have done.

Paul McCarthy, who has collaborated with Ian Wright on this book, is the Chief Football Correspondent for the 'News of the World'. He originally trained on his home-town paper, the 'Basingstoke Gazette', before joining the South London Press at the age of 22. He became deputy sports editor and covered Wimbledon Football Club for four years until recruited by the 'News of the World'. Paul still lives in Basingstoke with his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Sophie. This is his first book.

Ian Wright is one of the most popular yet controversial figures in world football, but still remembers his roots well. In this honest and frank autobiography he tells of his time serving at Her Majesty's Hotel, and what he really thought of other characters in the game. With emotional detail he talks of how he handed in his transfer request at the lowest point of his career. At times you are just amazed at his honesty, he admits and holds his hands up when he has done something wrong, but if he feels he is right he will do something he regrets in the future...

An entertaining read, for fans and rivals alike.
