Product Description

CD Description

* Ace's occasional producer-based series returns with a second collection focusing on the work of one of the most gifted, charismatic and successful behind-the-scenes record men of the 1960s.

* Perhaps because he died young - on 30 December 1967, aged 38, just as his career was reaching new heights - his name is not familiar to many, yet insiders and experts regard him as a legend.

* Released two years ago, "Twist & Shout: The Bert Berns Story, Volume 1" (CDCHD 1178) comprised recordings from 1960-1964. The story concludes here with Berns' compositions and productions released or recorded between 1964 and 1967.

* The CD includes familiar soul, rock and R&B classics by Solomon Burke, the McCoys, Erma Franklin, the Drifters, Van Morrison and Garnet Mimms, plus plenty of rare items for collectors. The titles by Tammy Montgomery (Terrell), Larry Hale, Kenny Hamber, Pat Embers, the Pussycats, Barbara Lewis, Bobby Harris and Roy C are all new to CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Outstanding, 8 Feb 2010
By
Mrs. T. A. Papworth "traceyann" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mr Success: The Bert Berns Story, Volume 2: 1964 -1967 (Audio CD)
The first volume is fantastic (5 stars) but somehow this second volume manages to surpass it. Any cd that starts with Tami Lynn's 'I'm gonna run away from you' has got to be special and this one never lets up. High profile names like Solomon Burke, Ben E King, Wilson Pickett, Otis redding, the Drifters and the ever great Garnet Mimms all shine. It's the quality in depth on this cd which makes it special and it's with the more rare songs like 'I went out with my baby tonight' by Moses K & the Prophets that make it unbeatable. Other rare tracks that shine are 'You'll never leave her' by Pat Embers, 'You maybe holding my baby' - the Pussycats and my personal favourite 'In front of her house' by Larry Hale with it's heartbreaking lyrics. Nearly all the songs are 9 or 10 out of 10, its full of majestic producations, well crafted songs, heartbreaking lyrics that are all sung to perfection. Buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking!, 6 April 2010
By
Gerard Hennessy (Wilmington, Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mr Success: The Bert Berns Story, Volume 2: 1964 -1967 (Audio CD)
In the liner notes to this, second, volume of the late great Bert Berns' work, Ace Records say that their overall aim is to make his name more familiar. Quite rightly they claim that his comparative unfamiliarity to many is an injustice. I could'nt agree more!

In my own short review of volume one in this series, I attempted to place Bert Berns' work in its overall context. There is no need to repeat that here. Put simply, if you liked the first volume, you will find this equally magnificent. And if, like me, you have been hunting down this material for many years, you will feel like all your birthdays have come at once. Some of these recordings have been virtually unobtainable for a very long time - Tammy Montgomery (later Tammi Terrell), the 'long' version of Hang on Sloopy complete with the long lost 'red dress' extra verse, Kenny Hamber, Freddie Scott and Bobby Harris, to name just a few. Favourite tracks? Almost too many to mention, but if pressed, an extra star for the fabulous Lorraine Ellison whose 'Heart Be Still' is an awsome example of Deep Soul & Gospel at its spellbinding best. And, as a proud Irishman, a special word of commendation for Moses K and the Prophets (from Belfast) whom I remember with great fondness from their earlier incarnation as the Mad Lads.

Otherwise I commend Mrs Papworth's excellent review (above) to you. She really has said everything else that one needs to say about this top class production. I concur entirely with every word she has written and can only echo her final point...
