Product Description

Robert Minkoff directs this animated adventure feature in which an ingenious talking dog and his human sidekick attempt to avert disaster. Mr. Peabody (voice of Ty Burrell) has the achievements to support claims that he is the smartest being on Earth. An influential and highly successful scientist, inventor, businessman and all round polymath, he also happens to be a dog who, in a somewhat unusual turn of events, has adopted a human boy, Sherman (Max Charles), to look after. However, when the curious Sherman creates havoc with Mr. Peabody's latest invention, the WABAC time-travelling machine, the boy and dog team must embark on an adventure through history to try and put things right, meeting figures including Leonardo Da Vinci (Stanley Tucci) and Sigmund Freud (Mel Brooks) along the way. Lake Bell, Leslie Mann and Allison Janney also lend their voices to the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars We've seen this film 9 times! 22 May 2014
My 7 year old daughter has autism and has been getting used to going to the cinema over the last year or so. She has enjoyed a number of films but they haven't always engaged her sufficiently for her to see them through to the end. This however was a huge favourite from the start - she loved it and so did we. It's visually interesting with very appealing characters for her (personally I like Agamemnon best!) and with enough historical interest and humour for us. It reminded me of Bill and Ted which is no bad thing in my book. It's just as well we liked it as she has insisted on going back to see it 9 times...she almost knows it off by heart now. I suspect some parents have had a less positive experience because their children are just too young for this film - I would say it's appropriate for 5-10 year olds (and their parents!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Entertaining 26 May 2014
I thoroughly enjoyed this at the cinema, and agree the date of release should be included. I would recommend to all for the realistic atmosphere created during the film and the links to historic events. I am glad it isn't to fantasy, and some parts really made me feel sorry for the characters, especially as things don't go as well as they were planned. I would also like to say how well some of the mistakes the people may of made were solved so the historic events would still seem like they are today.

My daughters liked this film a lot and me I found it entertaining, clever and VERY amusing, especially the fragments in which discreet jokes for adults were included, like the wonderful cameos by Ludvig van Beethoven, Kirk Douglas and Bill Clinton (I lost half of my popcorn because of this last one). Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.

The character of Mr Peabody appeared first on "Rocky and Bullwinkle show" in the late 50s, before starring in its own TV series, "Peabody's Improbable History" in the 60s. Those series told about famous characters from the past being visited by a dog named Mr Peabody (world's greatest genius) and his pet boy Sherman. This film is a highly modernized version of this latter show.

Unlike in the series, Mr Peabody walks mostly on two legs, treats Sherman as his son and not as a pet and is also much funnier and more likeable - in the old series Mr Peabody was a colder, more distant, more cynical character. In the series Sherman was slightly dim - in the film however he is just a regular 7-years old boy, may be just more enthusiastic, cheerful and kind-hearted than most.

Raised by a highly civilized and peace-loving father, Sherman is a very gentle child - which, once he starts school makes him an ideal target for the the alpha bully in his class, the abominable Penny Peterson, a girl cute as a button, spoiled like month old steak, mischievous like a cohort of leprechauns and as mean as a rattlesnake...))) One thing leading to another, poor Mr Peabody is forced into peace talks with Penny's parents and tries to reconcile the two kids - and at that moment the REAL troubles begin...

As I already said, this is a delightful film, both for children and for adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I don't get it!" 1 July 2014
This is a delightful animated family movie based on a segment from a 1950s and 60s American TV series. The previous attempt to make a film from the same show (Rocky and Bullwinkle i9n the mid 90s) was absolutely dire, however this fine toon makes amends in full, with its little-known but well-selected voice cast (Ty Burrell, Stanley Tucci and Ariel Winter to name but three), bright and breezy animated style, and zany, timey-wimey storyline.
Featuring a host of historical characters, including Marie Antoinette and Leonardo da Vinci, crazy inventions, and a hilariously super-smart dog in the eponymous Mr Peabody, this is one of those movies that adults will undoubtedly get more out of, but that has ample interest for children of all ages too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Entertaining 25 Sep 2014
We saw this in the cinema soon after it's release and to be honest I wasn't expecting too much, so prepared myself for yet another CGI animated film. But what a pleasant surprise!

I'm not a critic however the story, characters, presentation and CGI animation where all done collaboratively very well indeed and there was rarely a dull moment to let your interest wonder off from the story. The story should appeal to many with adults relating to the concerns of Mr Peabody as a single parent whom despite being a super intelligent canine, still worries and cares for the safety and upbringing of young Sherman and children watching the film will be rewarded by the humour and unravelling exciting chain of events that set in motion when the mix of time travelling is thrown in which inadvertently take a turn for the worse resulting in the journey also becoming a rescue mission.

Suffice to say we all enjoyed it thoroughly, especially my young daughter whom the film was mainly for. I'm/we are all looking forward to watching it again when it's released soon on DVD (which has been rather a long wait for some reason).

This is only a short review merely to share our impression and experience of the movie rather then go in depth about the whole story, something which can easily be read in other reviewers here and those by critics that have taken time to explain the story of the film and each character.

As a rule I tend to ignore hard critics and often find the only real way to know for sure if you'll enjoy a film is to watch it yourself as everyone's expectation and perception of a film can often be very different and sometimes similar.
