Book Description

10 May 2010
Darryn Lyons is the self-made multi-millionaire behind the international cult of celebrity photography. In this fascinating expose of life behind the lens, he spills the beans about his outrageous and dangerous exploits as a newspaper photographer and paparazzo and takes us ringside for some momentous events around the globe. His is a story of hard graft, hard tactics and hard choices in a notorious profession. He tells how a boy from down under, armed with little more than a camera and a memorable haircut and a passionate will to win, came out on top to build his own empire in the heart of London. The ace snapper put his marriage, his fortune and his life on the line for the rush of getting the best picture. Along the way he got a jaw-dropping insight into the world of high society and modern celebrity and the overwhelming power of the image.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just another story of celebrityville 25 Jun 2008
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have read and enjoyed other 'write and tell' tales about the celebrity circuit by the likes of Piers Morgan and the 3am girls and have enjoyed them, this one goes some way into the same lifestyles, but it also concentrates on other issues such as Darryn's life as a war photographer. There is not quite as much information on celebrities as in the other books, so you may find it slighly disappointing if you are simply after lots of juicy gossip. Lots of good interesting information about how his business evolved, but for me the description of the wars in Bosnia was not something that gelled particularly well with the celeb factor! This is not a complaint as it is a part of his career as a photographer that he lived through and of course he wanted to put his experiences in his book, but I preferred to read about the entertainment/celeb side rather than reading about wars. Darryn Lyons tells his story in a no nonsense way but does not delve that deeply into his own personal life, so you don't really get a real sense of empathy for him. From his own description he is a chancer and works incredibly hard to make things happen for him, that you have to admire. I would recommend this book, it is interesting in most places, but don't expect it to be another book on celebrity gossip.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair, honest and surprisingly entertaining 13 May 2014
By KazzieM
Format:Paperback
From reading the biographies of celebrities such as Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman and the like, as a teenager, I had started to avoid more recent celebrity biographies, as so many now only go up to a certain age/start of their career, or are about people who haven't really done anything noteworthy, or the "now updated" with an extra chapter after you've bought and paid for the last edition. I'd just finished reading a heavy World War One drama, so was looking for a lighthearted quick read from the library - I have to say I was pleasantly surprised....

I don't necessarily agree with how Darryn made his fortune (and whilst reading this I googled to see what he is up to now, and what a career change! - now Mayor of his home town) - but to review the book and not his life choices, I would say in the main it makes for an interesting and entertaining read. I liked that he didn't dwell on his childhood, and throughout the books there isn't alot about his personal life, though enough to know he takes care of and looks out for those he is close to, so it is his professional life this book is mostly about.

There is a really interesting section on his time as a photographer in war zones, his (hilarious) times on film sets, his involvement in Princess Diana's tragic crash, and quite alot of the book is devoted to the world of celebrity and showbiz - but as that is what he is best known for, it stands to reason I guess.

I do think he packs alot into the book, and the last couple of chapters are given to his thougths and theories on success, celebrity/ the industry - and I couldn't help feel he was trying to get a difficult point across regarding the Paris crash, by repeating a particular point in his acknowledgements at the end.
