Amazon.co.uk Review

TV chef Jackie Chan is involuntarily involved in a gang war between stereotypical Italians and punks right out of A Clockwork Orange. Most of the cast is in a coma, and the plot is stupid, stupid, stupid. The reason to watch this is for Chan's gravity-defying stunts as he is chased through the streets of Melbourne by Aussie thugs trying to relocate missing cocaine. Chan is so innovative with his tricks that it is a shame he doesn't work with more intelligent material. Still, his fans should enjoy this slight adventure, as Chan's carefully choreographed martial art moves are as awesome as ever. Watch for a stunt involving a horse-drawn carriage, as it almost compensates for the lacklustre story line. --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

Its hardly one of his best but "Mr. nice Guy" is vintage chan as far as the action goes. The plot is weaker than water and the acting is pretty dire but this was yet another attempt by Jackie to break into the mainstream hollywood market, and was filmed completely in English, thus presenting huge script problems for Mr. Chan and his at the time, less than perfect english. From this point of view you can see why all the acting is awful. But as per usual chan delivers the goods where it matters, his death defying stunts and beautifully crafted action sequences. "Mr. Nice guy" has several fine examples of Chan using the scenery around him to create inventive and explosive fight sequences. The film is made sweeter by the fact that Jackies's opera school big brother Samo hung is the stunt co-ordinator and even has a cameo role as a cyclist that gets beaten up by the gangsters. To summarise, its not his best, but every Chan fan should still own it. The action is nothing less than spectacular and the comedy is the typical slapstick affair we've come to expect from Chan, and in spite of hte plot and acting, the magic is still there.

An attempt to Westernise the traditional JC affair by setting it in Australia, Jackie plays Jackie (original!), a well-meaning TV chef who unwittingly gains possession of a video that incriminates a powerful drug lord. Cue an hour-long chase as the dealer, the cops, and some mercenaries all try their hardest to recover the tape.

Let's be honest, though: we don't watch Jackie Chan films with plot foremost in our minds, and the stunts and set-pieces in this film are some of his very best. The frequent fights in prop-stuffed locations are brilliant - well worth the often hysterical dialogue :)

In a word: fun.

Jackie Chan films should be treated like Fred Astaire's: you put up with the wafer-thin corny plots for the set sequences, which are so perfect within their field that you can forgive the shortcomings of the rest of the movie. Mr Nice Guy is a case in point. If you really can't stand the plot (personally, I think it adds to the charm of the movie) then fast forward to the action sequences, which are worth the price of the DVD in themselves.
