Book Description

4 Aug 1994
For author Martin Stillwater, life couldn't be more perfect. He and Paige are happy together; their two daughters, Emily and Charlotte, are intelligent and healthy; and his novels are achieving long-hoped-for levels of success. So why does he feel such dread, experience sudden blackouts?

The killer doesn't know his own name, only the name he uses. He has no family, no friends, no home. He cannot recall who gives him his assignments, and he doesn't know why his targets must die. Now, however, he senses that in a town he can't yet envision, a life awaits him, a place to call home, with family and friends.

Charlotte knows something is wrong: the man moves and sounds like Daddy, but he doesn't smile as quickly or as often as usual. And when he does smile, he seems to be pretending. Daddy isn't Daddy.

"I need . . ." Leaning back in his comfortable leather office chair, rocking gently, holding a compact cassette recorder in his right hand and dictating a letter to his editor in New York, Martin Stillwater suddenly realized he was repeating the same two words in a dreamy whisper. Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad. Not Great. 25 Sep 2002
Format:Paperback
Well, well. Widely known and well respected, Dean Koontz seems to have set this book up as his cornerstone in the 'thriller' section of his mind. It is thoroughly deserving of this title.

Koontz has a habit of starting slow and gradually accelerating to a breakneck pace. This book is no exception. His unique style is riveting and intense, but in this particular novel he is let down by his own forays into the absurd.

Unusually for Koontz, he does not pour his heart and soul into making the children believable, but instead shows how much they are loved by their father. If anything were to happen to them, it would be Marty that was the target of our sympathy.

The book is entertaining, fast paced and well written. But that's what you'd expect from Koontz. What lets him down here is storyline. Dark Rivers, False Memory, Phantoms, Whispers all have it. Mr Murder, unfortunately, does not. It's still a good read though, its just not a classic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would have been great with some editing 18 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
The story of Mr. Murder is a great horror story involving superhuman clones and secret conspiracies. And for a Koontz book, it's refreshingly free from super intelligent golden retrievers. It has spectacular action sequences, especially towards the end.

So why is it not more than a three star book? The problem is in the pacing. While it does have many spectacular, nail biting sequences, it also has too many parts that slows down the pace where not much happens. It is unnecessarily descriptive, sometimes repetitive. The fact that we get to see the story from both Stillwater's point of view and also from the point of view of the murderer, and get to know his thoughts ad feelings, adds an extra layer to the story, but it also slows down the pace, especially when, in the middle of some of the most climactic sequences, the action pauses to once more tell us how he feels about his "family".

Overall, "Mr. Murder" is a good book, but it should have been edited down a bit. It's not as slow as some of Koontz's worst works, but it's also nowhere near as fast paced as his best works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read but unbelievable storyline 20 Sep 2006
By Janie U VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
A good book in that I couldn't put it down, once it got into it's stride, however I think that the reason behind why "The Other" behaved the way he did was not explored fully. Liked the way the author got into the head of the killer, although felt that the twist at the end was fairly predictable. That said, a good read if you don't want to be challenged too far. It's the second of Dean Koontz's books that I've read and will read more if I come across them
