Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Released amidst rumors of romance between costars Angelina Jolie and soon-to-be-divorced Brad Pitt, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers automatic weapons and high explosives as the cure for marital boredom. The premise of this exhausting action-comedy (no relation to the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock comedy starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery) is that the unhappily married Smiths (Pitt and Jolie) will improve their relationship once they discover their mutually-hidden identities as world-class assassins, but things get complicated when their secret-agency bosses order them to rub each other out. There's plenty of amusing banter in the otherwise disposable screenplay by Simon Kinberg, and director Doug Liman gives Pitt and Jolie a slick, glossy superstar showcase that's innocuous but certainly never boring. It could've been better, but as an action-packed summer confection, Mr. and Mrs. Smith kills two hours in high style. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe the Anti Hype 25 Nov 2012
Format:DVD
I really don't get these negative comments for Mr and Mrs Smith at all and am wondering if these people have had a complete humour by pass before inserting the silver disk into the DVD machine. First off this film rather surprisingly is incredibly insightful about the politics involved in marriage. There are a number of brilliantly observed scenes where the couple are discussing décor or their relationship with a therapist which have the complete ring of truth about them. All this is shoe horned into a ridiculous plot involving two spies who are married but don't know the other has the same job. People who criticise the film for this ridiculousness really shouldn't even bother watching it because part of what makes this great is the stupid premise. It turns into a film take on the great cartoon strip from Mad magazine. "Spy vs Spy". Their attempts to kill each other become more and more ludicrous and the body count just keeps on mounting. Has there ever been a film where death and destruction is this much fun?
It's also possibly the most subversive "popcorn" movie I have ever seen. The fight in the kitchen has to be one of the funniest fight scenes since Trinity hung up his hat. There is a sequence where Pitt is kicking his wife seemingly to death behind the kitchen counter and it is hilarious. It works because this is a complete fantasy in which the wife gives at least as good as she gets ("Whose the Daddy now"?) and both spouses are incredible killing machines who happen to realise whilst they are trying to destroy each other that they are madly in love.
In summation, it's a bloody good laugh, so there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mr and Mrs Smith 10 Jun 2008
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray
'Mr and Mrs Smith' is a light hearted action/comedy. OK the plot is pretty bad, it has a rubbish ending and it may be a touch too long (all reasons for my 3 stars), but it wasn't trying to win any Oscars and is a fun, fairly innocuous, way to spend an afternoon. There are some funny moments, loads of action scenes and plenty of eye candy for the boys and girls. Some people seem to rate this film based against all others ever made, in that contest it will never win. But as an example of light entertainment it doesn't do too badly. Not brilliant, but not terrible either. Worth spending an afternoon watching when you don't want to think too hard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love and marriage... 17 Jan 2006
By Nikola
Format:DVD
Is it even possible to say a film with Angelina and Brad as leads would be bad? Of course not, even if it was this strange mix of emotions, humor and of course - ACTION! And action is basically the main thing in this flick. It's a story about two mercenaries who work for opposite agencies and are (oh, surprise!) not so happily married! Of course, they know nothing about each other and the exposure of their 'hobbies' gets them into all sorts of trouble. It is a little shock that this film has a lot of sarcastic 'How to keep a healthy marriage' moments as though it was copied directly from some women's magazine, but on the other hand it's action packed - these two qualities making it equally attractive for both men and women. Unfortunately, the movie lacks on substance but it's no problem: the charisma and charm of two of the hottest actors around are more than enough for a descent girls' night or a macho bachelorism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film
Great action film from beginning to end. Better than the recent James Bond Films. Good entertainment, you can watch over & over again and still see bits you missed the first time.
