From the day Pauline (Clemence Poésy) lends him a helping hand on the bus, the stubborn and weary Matthew Morgan (Sir Michael Caine) stumbles back to happiness. Swept off his old feet by the young woman's disarming vitality and unwavering optimism, the quiet teacher becomes an unlikely student of living. In their everyday adventures of walks through Paris, lunches in the park, and trips to the country, the odd couple explore the treasures of friendship, the comfort of companionship, the taste of romance and the meaning of family. Through their mutual restoration of faith in people who care, Pauline embraces the idea of a new kind of family while Matthew finally reconnects with his estranged son Miles, who in turn finds himself deeply affected by the changes in his father.

OK so this is very far from perfect. The parts of the 3 leading actors are scarcely believable but, if you go with the flow, this is an excellent way of passing time! It is a movie about bereavement and suicide so do not expect it to be hugely uplifting!

On the good side , the acting is first class. Sorry to the moaner but Caine is actually acting an American professor. Unfortunately he is a bit self obsessed so we do not learn much about the dance teacher with whom he falls in love.

The action is played out against a background of Paris and Le Havre , both of which look so good that you want to drop everything and go there.

Being a film partly about a dance studio there is some excellent old and retro French pop for those that like such things and I do!

Above all this is a film for adults written and acted with care at a time when I have not actually been inside a cinema for 6 months as most films are aimed at children or, even worse, "Young Adults" which is U.S. speak for early teen US girls who are , apparently, the last people on Earth actually buying and reading books. Their penchant is for very poor Sci Fi with a strong but romantic female lead. They should be made to watch the rootless Cha Cha teacher with father issues and her elderly friend who repeatedly tries to kill himself !

...unfairly harsh. I don't think the creator of the great Mostly Martha could ever be capable of producing something so crass.

This isn't a perfect film - Caine's accent is grating and a mistake (in my view) - but the story is moving, the script thoughtful and literate and the central performances are excellent. It is not a great film but it is both entertaining and moving (and very scenic!) and I will settle for that. Plus of course it is set in Paris which is worth a star in itself.

If you can borrow it or get it cheaply - I encourage you to do so.

A grumpy old man mets a lovely woman young enough to be his granddaughter. A connection develops and a deep frindship takes root. You have seen this story before and you know how it's going to end. But great performances by the leadactors Michael Caine, and Clemence Poésy and good supporting performances makes this worthwhile watching.

I must admit I enjoyed watching this somewhat mawkish film but on reflection I think I'm being generous in giving it three stars. There are so many things wrong with it. Michael Caine is a great actor but accents are not his strong point. Why didn't they cast an American actor in his role? And the role itself is too narrow for Caine who is at his best when playing more affable and emotionally intelligent characters. The basic story is improbable to say the least, essentially an old man's fantasy. Clemence Poesy is perfect as the dreamgirl, if you find such a character believable or interesting. Gillian Anderson appears and toughens things up for a while. We get real drama while she's on screen but she's gone all too soon. And the brilliant Jane Alexander is criminally underused. Her character is dead at the beginning of the film and we only see and hear her in a few short flashbacks. I suppose it is a tribute to Jane Alexander that when the producers wanted an actress who could delineate the character of a remarkable woman in a few short lines and a minimum of screen time, they thought of her.

'Last Love' is a film that bored me through the first half. It seemed as if Michael Caine who plays the lead was as depressed as his character. The storyline dragged as his character, a retired professor who was trying to recover from the death of his beloved wife. Although they lived in Paris, there was no joy after she died. He met a young woman, paula, played by Clemenceau Poesy, who was also all alone, and their misery brought them together.

It is not until a trauma occurs that the film picks up. Matthew's self absorbed daughter, Karen, played by Gillian Anderson and his son, Mikes played by Justin Kirk, come to Paris to save him, that the pace picks up. But, really, the film is all about lost love, words unsaid and the disjointed families trying to find their way.

But, then, again the film slows and becomes the cliche it is. Michael Caine seemed to be sleep walking through this film. Not his best effort, by far. The last half kept my interest, but not enough.

Not a bad film, although Michael Caine not ideal casting, and they could have just let him play it British and save the distracting accent. A study of family - Pauline has none, and thinks that Matthew and his son should treasure theirs, but Matthew's family is broken beyond repair. More French film than Hollywood, don't expect a tidy conclusion full of reconciliations. Beautiful scenery, some nice US/French characterisation, and Pauline is beautifully portrayed. Worth watching, but falls short of what it could have been with less than perfect casting and unsatisfactory ending.
