Product Description

Synopsis
This is the first in a brand-new mystery series starring the brilliant, beloved and slightly neurotic sleuth from the hit BBC 2 series. Monk's house is being fumigated, and he has nowhere to go. Fortunately, his assistant Natalie and her daughter are kind enough to welcome him into their home. Unfortunately, their home is not quite up to Monk's standards of cleanliness and order. But while Monk attempts to arrange his surroundings to suit himself, Something else needs putting straight. The death of a dog at the local fire station - on the same night as a fatal house fire - has led Monk into a puzzling mystery. And much to his horror, he's going to have to dig through a lot of dirt to solve it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Monk and the Dead Dog, 13 Mar 2006
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Adrian Monk is about to be homeless. His apartment is being fumigated for termites, so he needs a place to stay. Fortunately, his assistant Natalie is willing, reluctantly at best, to take him in for the week.

Monk's hardly started moving in when Natalie's daughter gets a phone call. Sparky, the Dalmatian at the local firehouse, has been murdered. While not the type of case that Monk would normally take, he agrees to find the killer to make Julie feel better.

While trying to interview Fireman Joe, Sparky's owner, Monk and Natalie go to the scene of a fatal fire. Monk hasn't been there five minutes before he declares that the fire was not the accident it looks like but arson to cover up a murder. Is there a connection with the case of the murdered dog?

It's no secret to anyone who knows me that I love this TV series. Knowing Mr. Goldberg's excellent work with the Diagnosis: Murder novels, my hopes were high for this book. They were met on every level.

Mr. Goldberg decided to write the book from Natalie's point of view. Not only does this give us great insight into the character, but it also allows us to marvel, laugh, or be frustrated with Monk's strange antics. The characters on the show are well rounded, and that holds true here as well. While we may be laughing at Monk in one scene, we sympathies with him in the next. Watching this from Natalie's viewpoint allows us to see how she deals with the challenges of her job on a daily basis.

The plot stays true to the series as well. Even though it is rather obvious early on who did it, the real mystery becomes how will Monk prove it. Along the way, there are several false trails and a couple twists that put Monk into uncomfortable situations. Each chapter has a title, but even looking ahead, I couldn't figure out what they might mean for the plot.

The story is told in an easy to read style that pulls you in and makes it hard to put down. I raced through the book to see what would happen next. And the humor of the series comes through as well. I started laughing on page two and a smile never left my face for the rest of the book.

While there are a couple inconsistencies with the TV show, only Monk wouldn't be able to overlook them and enjoy this book. It easily captures the spirit of the TV show and will entertain fans and non-fans alike with its humor and warmth.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Firehouse, 6 Sep 2007
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
'Mr Monk Goes to the Firehouse' is the first in the new series of books based on the show "Monk", written by Lee Goldberg who has also written episodes for the TV series.

The story begins when Adrian Monk is forced to stay with his assistant and personal nurse, Natalie and her daughter Julie, for a while whilst his home is being fumigated for termites. Monk is then hired by Julie to investigate the murder of the local fire station's dog, Sparky, who has been killed by a pick-axe.
The investigation of the dog's murder links to another murder from the same night, this time an old lady who has been smothered to death by a pillow and then has her house burnt down. With the help of Natalie, Captain Stottlemyer and Lieutenant Disher, Monk solves the crimes fairly quickly but he then has to prove how the killer did it.

Anyone who has seen and loves the TV show will appreciate the comedy of Monk's character and will easily be able to picture the hilarious situations he gets himself into in this book and it will have you literally laughing out loud (I did on a number of occasions). The book is written from the perspective of Monk's assistant Natalie, rather than the detective himself (like in Sherlock Holmes), which is a clever way of describing Monk's obsessions and phobias, as if this was written from Monk's perspective instead he wouldn't see anything wrong with his unusual behaviour and would probably be ignored.

Overall this is an absolutely hilarious whodunnit with all of the charm of the show and it's characters captured perfectly by Goldberg and is most certainly worthy of the TV show that fans should enjoy without a doubt. I look forward to reading the rest of the Monk series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mr Monk and the Written Word, 24 Dec 2006
By Foggy Tewsday - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The creators of the television series, `Monk', have cited Sherlock Holmes as part of the inspiration behind the character. Monk's analytical and deductive prowesses certainly owe something to Holmes. Perhaps author Lee Goldberg had the Holmesian tradition in mind when he decided to use Monk's friend and assistant, Natalie Teeger, to relate this story from her point of view, just as Conan Doyle did with Dr. Watson.

Fans of the excellent television show upon which this novel is based may rest assured that the novel is entirely in keeping with the spirit of the show. There are plenty of laughs as Monk temporarily moves into Natalie's home complete with his idiosyncratic need to monopolise the bathroom. The mystery element of the story kicks in when Natalie's daughter, Julie, asks Monk to investigate the suspicious death of a dog belonging to a local firefighter.

As is often the case in the television show, Monk quickly works out who the killer is and the reader's pleasure is in the detective's quest to prove his case. There is a romantic subplot involving Natalie and a fireman, and lots of Monk being, well, Monk.

The novel is a nice, easy read, but the `howdunnit' (the `whodunnit' is already known) aspect is cleverly realised. I would say that `Monk' is a television show that lends itself quite comfortably to novel form and if you like watching the show, you should enjoy this novel.
