Product Description

When Rob MacGregor is picked as the new presenter of a struggling gardening programme, he quickly becomes a favourite with everyone. And that's half his trouble...

Having a gardener who's also a sex symbol might be a godsend for the TV bosses, but there are plenty of others who are not so happy: Bertie Lightfoot for one, the expert Rob replaced; Guy D'Arcy, another TV rival and insatiable womaniser; and most importantly Rob's fiery girlfriend, Katherine -- an investigative journalist on the local paper. As Rob becomes more and more wrapped up in his career, and she is involved in a big story for the paper, the relationship comes under strain. Especially when a misunderstanding causes sparks to fly and things get really complicated...

This is an excellent first attempt by Alan (later to be followed by two more classics!) The storyline is gripping and there are many unpredictable little twists to the plot along the way. I don't find books easy to read but it's difficult to put this one down - it's the sort of book you think about during the day at work. I recommend this book without reservation.

Needing something light to while away the hours over here in Japan I picked up Mr. Macgregor. I'm not much of a gardening man - indeed I tend to switch channels when such programmes come on the TV - but this one caught the imagination. And what do you know ? It's excellent. Alan Tichmarsh writes with an engaging style that I would never have expected, draws wonderful word pictures of events and characters and keeps the story going at just the right pace to ensure that you're turning the pages in expectation. Funny and endearing, the text flows smoothly and you are filled with pangs of anxiety as you see the number of pages still to go getting fewer and fewer. I would never have believed that gardening would make such a good subject for a light-hearted and funny story, or that Alan Tichmarsh could have told it so well. How wrong I was. I don't have my copy on me at present - it's doing the rounds of all my friends. Read Mr. Macgregor, water in well and pass it on. Then wait for a lovely crop of smiles to bloom. Perfect for any season.

A good novel. 2 Feb 2001
Format:Audio Cassette
This is a good book for an author's first novel, but it lacks a certain something. It hasnn't got the same happy glow to it as his other two books have (The Last Lighthouse Keeper & Animal Instincts), but it is a good novel all the same.

Mr MacGregor
I find Alan Titchmarsh an easy read, the story was compact and I didn't get bored half way through the book.

Very disappointed
I have seen Alan Titchmarsh on television and I like his style. I threw this book in the compost heap, after reading about half of it. As I could not stand the swearing in it. Read more

Simply brilliant
It has been a very long time since I enjoyed a novel as much as I did this one. Having read many of Alan Titchmarsh's gardening books, which in my opinion are first class, I was... Read more

Not bad for a jobbing gardener
This was fairly well written and no more far fetched in the romance stakes than many other books I've read by full time writers. The character of Rob was nicely drawn. Read more
