Mr In-Between has an intelligent, literate script, which takes a swipe at the philosophical pretensions of some of the characters, while never flinching from exploring the consequences of their actions. It also sports a unique, quirky tone - it's cold and gritty on one level, but also surreal and nightmarish on another. Plus a finely graduated performance from Andrew Howard as the anti-hero Jon, and a scene-stealing one from David Calder as his mentor/lover/father figure the Tattooed Man.
All this is beautifully packaged by Paul Sarossy's superb ice cool visuals (following on from his award-winning work on Atom Egoyan's films) and a well-chosen score, which provides a running thread of pitch-black humour. It's a film which asks difficult questions and leaves you with something to think about. And how many films can boast that?
