Format: Hardcover
Set before and during World War 2, this has more than a passing similarity to Ms Comyns' better known work 'Our Spoons came from Woolworths'. Single mother, going off to work as a housekeeper, financial difficulties but magical times too...
The narrator, Catherine, has an ambiguous relationship with the rather 'spiv' like Mr Fox. He rescues her from her financial predicament, but the pressure of her young child Jenny makes their life together problematic, especially once Mr Fox is called up to work in a factory ('making jigs I think it was called, but it wasn't anything to do with dancing').
Written in Ms Comyns' individual, quirky style I really enjoyed it.

B. Comyns is a gift. Funny as all get out with an extraordinary view of the London blitz but one ordinary one woman. mr. fox is one if the funniest characters in literature ..part mobster, part shyster and with a very bad temper.
