Amazon.co.uk Review

Her: "What if I told you I didn't love you any more?" Me: "I wouldn't believe you." Her: "But you wouldn't ever give up trying?" Me: "Nah. Some things you can't give up on, can you?"
Mike Gayle became the popular prince of romantic comedy overnight with his first bestselling novel My Legendary Girlfriend. With Mr Commitment he's back with a tale of the modern male that delivers its punchlines directly to the heart.

The world of aspiring stand-up comic Benjamin Dominic Duffy is shaken to its uncertain foundations when his adored girlfriend Mel revokes her previously held opinion of marriage as "an outmoded concept created by a patriarchal society to keep women in their place" and, on bent knee, proposes to him. Mel, "a living, breathing, moving version of Chrissie Hynde singing "Brass in Pocket"," is the girl of his dreams--but Duffy's dilemma is that marriage is still his worst nightmare. Dan, his best friend, flatmate and fellow bath-dodger counsels him to retain The Ways of the Bachelor, while Mel's best friend Julie--known as Nosferatu due to her bloodless dislike of all things Duffy--urges her to rebuff his increasingly desperate attempts to regain her affections. When a blissful reunion is sabotaged by domestic rites of passage through IKEA, Duffy resolves to "become a bachelor boy like Dan--a superstud of seduction, a he-who-will-never-again-come- off-worse-with-the-chicks, a righteous dude committed to anything but commitment." But when even TV's Hottest Totty media-babe Alexa Wells cannot help him become a success as a stand- up--in more ways than one--Duffy begins to wonder if he's given up all for nothing.

Gayle has an eye for the soulful romance and wry comedy in the utterly ordinary, and Mr Commitment marries heartfulness and hilarity with a yearning that stops comfortably short of the sentimental. --Rachel Holmes --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Bloody Amazing 9 April 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I found this book to be amazing. It is perfectly written so that you really feel you are part of the story, its so easy to relate to most of it, theres something for everyone in here. I could hardly put it down, in fact i think i only did once, but then it was 3 in the morning. I think it sums up life for men at the moment, and the way women see us. Although as a whole most men aren't leaping for joy at the sound of commitment we are not opposed to it, we just dont realise we have it and dont need to show it in an open manner. Best book i have read in such a long time and always a joy to go back to.

I read 'My Legendary Girlfriend' and thought that it was a brilliant book and I couldn't wait to read Mike Gayle's other books. So when I picked up 'Mr.Committment' (on Wednesday) and 'turning Thrity' (on Friday), I couldn't wait to read them. I decided to read 'Mr.Committment' first and Mike Gayle did not dissapoint me, this book is brilliant and gives great insight to the fear that men (or women but in this case men)have towards committment. If you haven't read this book then you should definitely get yourself a copy and have a couple hours to spare to read the book, its a really quick book to read (I'm a slow reader and it took me less than 5 hrs with breaks in between to finish it) once you open the book you will not be able to put it down.

This book was brilliant, I too read this in the space of an afternoon and blubbed my way from the bit where he watches ET right through to the end. The characters are perfectly described and after a while you forget you don't actually know them yourself. Absolutely brilliant, even the boyfriend read it and couldn't stop talking about it for days - there's an achievement believe me. On a completely random note - it was refreshing to read a story where the main character actually adores his/her mother and doesn't have to go on about a stereotypical nagging old woman, very nice indeed. Anyone who has reviewed this in a negative way obviously has no sense of humour so ignore them, they are pants.

A fun book with characters you can relate to
So I'm not a big fan of male indecisiveness, but I must say that this book made me feel for the main male character and understand his mentality. Read more

Ok, but far from perfect
I have to disagree with the other reviewers! I have only read one other book by Gayle (HIs 'n' Hers) and I found it much better than Mr Commitment. Read more

Well done once again Mr Gayle. Very easy read, unputdownable and hilarious in places. The book strikes real issues in such a witty observational way. Read more

Delivers on it's promises
Mike Gayle has, yet again, delivered a cracking piece of literature in Mr Commitment.

Like all of Gayle's novels, the basic premise is this: Life is game, in which men don't... Read more

Too predictable, not impressed!
I did not find the book funny at all. In fact, it is far too predictable, with tedious dialogues, unimaginative vocabulary and unrealistic in terms of character decsription. Read more
