Mr Benn always visits a costume shop, chooses a costume and goes through a special door. Then, as if by magic, he can travel to the era represented by the costume. This time he choosesa gladiator costume . . . and he is transported to Ancient Rome. But he has forgotten that gladiators fought one another. When the Emperor spots Mr Benn, he has him carried off to the arena. The worried gladiators there explain that they must fight, even though fighting is wrong. Mr Benn is another iconic Seventies TV character and his fame deservedly continues with this story that faithfully reproduces the style and feel of the original series. In case you didn't know, Mr Benn is a very ordinary man who lives on a very ordinary street, but a man who has a secret; when he goes to the costume shop on his street he not only dresses as a character but he enters that character's world for a day. This leads to all manner of fantastical adventures where he has a go at being a balloonist, a conjuror, an astronaut and a king, amongst others.
In this book Mr Benn becomes a gladiator for a day and is caught up in an adventure where he has to find an alternative to fighting in order to survive. The story is great but it was the nostalgia-inducing drawings that really sold this book to me.

Learning about time-travel in school. This was a different way of tackling the subject and made it fun for the children. Children enjoyed this book and were interested in different Mr Benn books.
