4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not best 6 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is an interesting version of the Magic Flute. The cast is quite good, especially with Sumi Jo as the Queen of the Night. The orchestra plays on period instruments which makes the sound less brilliant than what we are used to. However, once one gets used to it, the period instruments are actually quite charming, and produces a nice balance with the voices. My major complaint is the tempo, which is unusually fast. Everything seems rushed. The singers do not have the opportunity to enjoy the notes and the score, which kind of affects the performance. If you enjoy Sumi Jo as Queen of the Night, then Solti set is the better bet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many weak spots 7 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
A lot of things are very good in this recording, but unfortunately is lacks warmth. The technical performance is top, but this opera needs more than that to come alive.
The singers are mostly excellent. Streit is a powerful Tamino with a great flow in the voice. Cachemaille might not be the ideal Papageno, but he has a very attractive lightness in his voice. Bonney IS Pamina - better I couldn't imagine. Jo handles the Queen's coloratura (including the embellishments) so easily that she never gets really dangerous. Sigmundsson is not even close to being a Sarastro. He sounds uncomfortable most of the time. Total disappointment!
Petzold is a Monostatos without edge. Ziesak, Hansen and Vermillion are three ladies of absolute top class. Watson is not the most memorable Papagena. Hagegård is doing the Speaker with warmth and dignity. (Still in my ears he is the Papageno in the Bergman/Ericson version many years ago.)
The Drottningholm Court Theatre orchestra is superb all through with some excellent woodwind playing to top it with.
This could be a VERY good recording if it wasn't for Arnold Östman. He is running through the tempi without giving himself, the orchestra nor the singers time to make music. The strange thing is that when the score asks for a faster tempo then he is slowing down. (For example in some of the parts with Monostatos.) This ends up with tempi that are more or less the same, but mostly too fast or too slow. (Fortunately there are some rare occasions when the tempi works, for example in the duets with Pamina and Papageno.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Östman's 'Die Zauberflöte' 6 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
What a miracle to find a recording of an impeccable performance of the opera and how great is it to find it cheap on Amazon. People who are interested in this opera, I recommend you to purchase this recording. It has a modern interpretation. It has authentic instruments and lots of fast tempi and staccatos, even though the traditional interpretations sound more exquisite for me when modern instruments are used. I don't at all mind it that way. Kurt Streit and Barbara Bonney are just the right singers for the prince and princess. Their voices sound perfect for their roles and they sing beautifully. Sumi Jo is one of the best singers for the Queen of the Night. All the other singers are also stupendous. This is just marvellous.

Many people consider this version the most magical of all the Magic Flutes. This is the version to get that includes the recitatives. Get this one along with the Klemperer version.
