Product Description

Review

By singing much beefier repertoire than their previous recordings, the Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum are a transformed body of singers. Joined here by the full-fibre period ensemble Charivari Agréable, the music is by Mozart the Coronation Mass, the motet Ave verum corpus and the Solemn Vespers and the vocal performances are ripe and fruity. Director Benjamin Nicholas draws from the Mass a scorching vitality, and fields an ensemble of soloists (award-winning treble Laurence Kilsby included) that are sure-footed and distinctive. The Ave verum is warm and unsentimental; the Vespers are as arresting as the Mass. --Kenneth Walton, The Scotsman, 29 November 2011

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Mozart 21 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD
This CD enhances the already considerable reputation of the Schola Cantorum of Tewkesbury Abbey (this is their second release on the Delphian label in recent months) and surely places this choir among the finest of its genre (boys and men) in the country.

The recording is extraordinary for a start in that a boy treble sings the solos that are more usually sung on recordings by a soprano. Laurence Kilsby brings both an exceptional voice and outstanding musicality to all the solos, the Agnus Dei and Laudate Dominum being simply quite stunning. Is this the finest treble voice of this, or indeed many another, generation?

The choir, orchestra and quartet of all-male soloists under Benjamin Nicholas's direction combine to make this an absolutely superb, must-have recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning 28 Nov 2011

Another long-awaited disc from the Tewkesbury Schola Cantorum, and a particularly happy one for those of us who prefer a single composer to a medley. The highlight of the recording is the once-in-a-lifetime voice of Laurence Kilsby, by no means your ordinary delicate treble but a full soaring 'soprano'. My only hesitation in giving this 5 stars was the technical mismanagement of the Agnus dei, which has to be boosted in volume to be adequately heard. Once you hear it though, it is well worth the effort and the 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful cd! 5 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is truly a wonderful cd.(Today, 31-12-2011 reviewed positively on BBC by Andrew MacGregor)
I don't think anyone could imagine that these Mozart works could be done by a choir like Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum in such a marvellous way!
All the soloists are excellent. The choir is great. The orchestra is very good even if the timpani seem to be overdoing it a bit.
The recording is impeccable.
TASC has really surpassed itself.
Benjamin Nicholas has done a wonderful job.
The UK is really very fortunate to have choirs like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding highly collectable CD 23 Feb 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I can only reiterate the complimentary remarks of other reviewers. This is a truly excellent performance. The enclosed booklet is packed with useful information. An added bonus is the very nice informal looking picture of Kid Kilsby himself, confronting you when the jewel case is opened, together with a generous sprinkling of his fellow choristers throughout the booklet. It is so nice to put faces to the exquisite sound.
A stunning performance by all and a very highly recommended CD that I will treasure for ever.
