Sublime 2 Jun 2010
By Ralph Moore TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I've known this music for years but every time I listen to it, I am once more transported into that quintessentially Mozartian world of bittersweet reverie, where wry humour alternates with moments of heart-stopping poignancy and beauty. Of course the famous Adagio from the "Gran partita" forms the centrepiece of the recital but everything here is played with such dedication and sensitivity. The compilation sets up an interesting contrast between the more refined, restrained sound of the wind ensemble under the celebrated oboist Heinz Holliger in K375 and the more bucolic earthiness generated by members of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner. Both styles afford their pleasures, and the elegance of the Holliger band acts as a counterpoint to the wonderful "squeeze-box" effect produced by the ASMF players in that Adagio, as the bassoons growl away in the bottom line. The Finale, too, is great fun: not taken too fast but giving all the voices their chance to take the stand; I especially like the squawking oboes' protesting intrusions. A lovely little bonus from the Holliger Ensemble is the elegant Adagio in F K410/484d; 1 minute and 26 seconds of swiftly pacing moto perpetuo delight.

Copies of this disc are currently available only on Marketplace at high prices; if you can find an affordable one, grab it. This is the kind of music which needs to be preserved in a time capsule or sent off in space probe; it bespeaks the best of our civilisation.

Heart's content! 20 Sep 2002

I place the Gran Partita, K. 361, as Top Ten Mozart, and it's played with such joy here, I was almost taken aback. I have three other versions, and this one just may be my favorite. One version is all shadows, which is cool, but oh! the joy in the present version. K. 375 and K. 388 are played perfectly too. The good thing about this set is they have a lot of hard-to-find pieces for wind. To me, Mozart was unparalled at wind writing. The textures! The tones! It's too good to be true. Hooray!

What's Not to Love? 18 April 2004

I have owned this set for several years and return to it endlessly. The angel Mozart has been praised over the centuries-and deservedly so-for many works, but no one-no one- wrote for wind band quite like him,as this lovely set attests. There is the familiar "Gran Partita" and "Nacht Musique" here, as well as wonderful gems for all combinations imaginable of wind instruments. Especially superb are the divertimenti for oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, horn and bassoon. Mozart's music always "sings," but particularly so in these joyous, soulful entertainments. The artistic lineup is unbeatable too: The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Holliger Wind Ensemble, and The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. This is sweet, wonderful stuff.

Mirthful 11 May 2008

People often talk about the poignant and elegant qualities of Mozart's music, but I don't often much hear people discuss the humor of the man's work.

As immortal as he is, I can't help but see him as "a shape-shifting imp of the perverse," often mocking listeners and teasing the trained ear more than it can stand. I don't know when I first started to hear the humor, perhaps I was around twenty-five or so, but I suppose I only noticed it due to the questioning I received when I started laughing in the midst of a recording or performance.

The precocious child is present in everything I've heard, be it sonata, symphony, or serenade. Even the most melancholic expressions seem animated by the wily puppet-master's hands... and often are we too moved to notice.

Serenade in C minor and Serenade in E flat are among his most overlooked masterpieces. They used to be available in a 3cd set, but it looks as if you now have to buy the complete set for some reason. No worries, though, there's only more to digest, more to discuss... and more to smirk at.
